I have a Speke’s Hinge back Tortoise. I got him a few months ago. He poops every couple days but it smells really bad. Maybe a change in diet can stop the smell? He usually poops in his water bowl/trey because he likes to sit and soak in it. I clean out the trey immediately after every poop because it stinks up the whole house!

Background:
He has a mulch-like substrate, a UV/heat lamp, a water trey, a food trey, a hide (cave), and a heating pad on one side of his terrarium for his basking area.
His diet consists of kale, collard greens, carrots and squash (squash is only twice a week, more of a treat).
He also has calcium powder and vitamin power which I sprinkle on his food accordingly

Here is an image of his terrarium this morning before I cleaned it out (he’s in his hide right now)

I don't know, man. Poop in general isn't going to smell that great, and since he is eating a lot of veggies I don't think you can do anything about it. Torts can be stinky.

I bathe my tort every other day and she poops in her bath to save myself the horror of stinking up her enclosure AND my room. She seems to be on a schedule and rarely poops in her house.

I would like to recommend a better temp reader, and a more varied diet though.

Certainly the diet should be more varied. Check the diet sheets for this species. It may make a difference in the smell too.

Also, it is possible that you may be giving him too much vitamin powder. If he is getting a varied diet of the right foods, he may not need the vitamins so often as you are giving it to him, and it (the vitamin powder, what is it?) may help make the poop smell stronger.

I’ve been feeding
Him different
Types of greens now. He eats romaine, kale, collard and another one that I’m blanking on right now. He also still has carrots and on occasion, squash.
His poop has been better. Thanks
For the advice!

I asked about the vitamins, what they are and how often you were giving them to him.

I have 10 Hingebacks...the smell is normal but you need to feed some protein...there are omnivorous...I feed mine worms & invertebrates...
