It is with a heavy heart I have to tell everyone that WalkingRock was found dead in his bunker today. It is believed he succumbed to the extremely harsh winter in Oklahoma.

RIP buddy, you will be missed!

Oh no ! :(:(:(
I am so sorry that WalkingRock died. I am sorry for your loss.
I read the thread that he moved to a new home. When the winter is cold there, wasn`t taken enough care of the tortoise in his new home ?

Apparently he left his bunker one night and was discovered hiding under a bush after following his tracks in the snow. He was transported back to his bunker where the temp had dropped to 65*. Not a bad temp but he may have been under the bush for awhile. Northern Oklahoma had a rough winter and his bunker was monitored for temp but not always checked to make sure he stay put.

He never recovered from the cold I'm guessing

So sorry man. I know he meant a lot to you. I wish it hadn't gone this way.

this breaks my heart. Animals and children are our blessings. As a child my mother would always tell us, as we cared for our pets, children and pets are a gift from God, and you must go above and beyond to care for them, they did NOT ask to come into your life, you make the choice. Always give 110%. My prayers for you and your heart.

Please be aware the Jerry and Georgie live on a farm and have many Farm Animals. They created a large area next to the house with a heated bunker. He was well cared for and loved. Jerry and Georgie were both beside them self’s with grief when they called me.

They did nothing wrong. WalkingRock has a history of Midnight walks, especially on night of the Full Moon. I’m sure with clear skies and a layer of snow, WalkingRock took a stroll and got too cold too fast and dashed to the closest bush. Since putting him in his bunker is a nightly check and he was found late the next morning, I’m afraid this case it was just a tragic accident.

Well..... I'm not sure it could be classified as an "accident"...he could be loved and cared for but if you take an animal out of its native habitat you have to ensure that the new artificial habitat you create for him is safe. Snow isn't something he would encounter in his own environment, in my opinion he should have been secured in his bunker. But I'm very sorry for what happened.

What a bummer! I am so sorry to hear this. Thank you for posting though. I appreciate the reminder to be diligent with my guy. He likes to walk in the snow. I always lock him in at night, but I should check more often to make sure he is not stretching his walks to long.
Lessons learned the hard way really suck. I am really sorry.

True, but had I still been his care taker, I would never have thought to lock him down for the night. Not anything I would have done so never thought to tell my little brother about. That is why I think of it as an accident. WalkingRock always had free roam.
