Hi guys! I've been lurking on this forum for a while and decided to finally make an account and introduce myself!

I am Sarah. My mom has an approx. one year old sulcata tortoise but is often out of town so I've been the primary Tortoise Wrangler.

The tortoise is named Señor, though he may be a Señora. (Explanation -- when my brother first took Spanish, he latched onto the word tortuga and every time he saw a turtle he'd say "Tortuga!" So as adults when we saw Mom's new tortoise we naturally started referring to it as Señor Tortuga.)

The pet store of course gave terrible advice -- tiny tank with sand, no real instructions as far as heat and humidity. So I'm struggling a bit with equipment at the moment, especially with the indoor enclosure (space, light, and heat sources.) I tried to order a kiddy pool online but I ordered something that I thought gave dimensions in feet but instead it was *inches* so I got this tiny sort of box thing that's maybe 1.5 ft by 1.5. Rookie online shopping mistake. (Current readings -- Temp is 80, humidity is 70. Not enough room to have temperature variations. Trying to make this current set-up as temporary as possible. Thinking of getting a big ol plastic storage container for him.)

His temporary outdoor enclosure is working better and luckily the weather here is 80° and humidity around 70 (and I hose everything off before putting him in it to raise it higher.) As soon as possible I want to give him the whole yard but that will require some landscaping and tortoise-proofing first. Currently he's in a 2x6 raised garden bed. I'm having trouble posting pics right now but I'll try to post some later. There's some half-sunken plastic plant containers so he can have somewhere cool to go, and I have a wooden turtle house, the "saucer" from a plant pot is being used as a water dish, and I turned the original glass tank we were using onto its side and put some dirt in it so he can have that as a shelter option as well.

I'm about to place an order on Amazon for a 100 Watt CHE and a 25 watt heating pad. I was also thinking of getting some grass seed especially for sulcatas ("African grasses tortoise blend"), but is that even necessary or would it be fine with just the weeds and grass already in my yard? Also, is the heating pad necessary? I just read somewhere that they're not great for younger guys since they can warp their bottom shell or something? But I was also thinking I might use it for the turtle house in his outdoor enclosure since nighttime temps are mid to upper 60s right now. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before any decision I make.

Tomorrow I'm also going to Lowes to get some plants (I'm aware that due to fertilizers, etc. I shouldn't give them to Señor right away -- he's too little to be out full time anyway, so I'm hoping that by the time he's grown a few more inches the plants will be safe and ready for him!) and also look to see what sort of fencing options they have. I'm thinking a low stone wall would be a nice way to fence off his permanent enclosure, but I don't have a huge budget.

Thanks for reading! Can't wait to meet y'all. From what I've read, it seems like a pretty good group here. :)

Welcome to the Forum! Good to hear you are working on your enclosure! Keep trying to upload some pix of your enclosure, outdoor space and Señor.

Make sure you continue or start giving your young Sully daily warm water soaks!

Good luck.

Hello Sarah. In your area is a valuable resource, the Tampa Bay Turtle & Tortoise Society. They meet on the second Saturday of the month at Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater, Florida 33759. Meetings usually start around 7:00. You'll meet dozens of individuals who have asked many of the same questions that you have.
Also next weekend, Feb. 24-25, 2018 is Repticon at the Tampa Fair grounds. There you'll meet hundreds of turtle & tortoise enthusiasts, plus our organization will have a booth for displays and to provide any assistance needed. Stop by and say hello.

Thank you so much! I'd been trying to find some local groups so this is great! I'll try to make it out to repticon and some meetings. (I don't own a car so sometimes getting to neighboring cities can be difficult or time consuming, but these definitely seem worth checking out!)

Some pics! Indoor enclosure still needs work... The container seemed roomy when I bought it at the store but then it got crowded quick when I started to put stuff in it! I'll go back to the store and buy another tomorrow. Any suggestions of other stuff I should get?

Substrate: Dirt and spagham moss
Food: Weeds and a torn up banana leaf

High temp: 90
Low temp: 76
Humidity: 75
(I realize these numbers should all be higher. I'm getting a few heating elements in the mail soon and am researching ways to keep up humidity. Advice is appreciated!)

I soak once or twice daily, depending on how long the first soak is -- sometimes he's content to soak 30+ minutes, other times he seems more impatient.

Outdoor temps here are mid 70s and around 80% humidity. Gotta love FL. I tried to give him some shade options. I water everything before putting him in the outdoor enclosure so it's nice and moist. I put in a cuttle bone and this mineral block thingy from ZooMed, but he's been ignoring them.

He's a little under 3 ounces and only 3 inches long (shell length) so he's still a little dude. Around 8 months old, I think.

Oh, and I asked off of work to go to that Repticon thing this weekend that someone mentioned!! So I hope to learn and see lots of stuff there.

Please feel free to shout out any advice or criticism.20180216_182848.jpg20180213_111559-1.jpg20180216_103314.jpg

Just some updates (I'll probably use this thread to share updates periodically so go ahead and unfollow if you're not interested!)

The indoor enclosure is still too small, but I did add a CHE so now there's a hot spot of 100! Overall temps 80. I found out that if I put the enclosure against an open window and make it partially covered, I can get the humidity *almost* to 80%. When I do buy another enclosure I'll make sure to get one with tall sides so humidity and covering it will be easier.

I'm looking into covering the outdoor enclosure with chicken wire or something and also adding a heating element to his house so I can move him out full time in good weather. I know he's just a little dude still but soon even the nights will be mid to upper 70s so I don't want him to miss out on the nice weather. Only issue is my neighborhood has a few stray cats that I'm worried will discover him.

On the menu today is a nice succulent salad. :) I've been trying to gather some yard weeds but I've learned some are high in oxalates so am doing more research on what ones are good. Luckily succulents are easier to identify and we have lots of em. My indoor substrate is soil and I've noticed a few grass sprouts which I'll leave for him to graze on. I ordered some tortoise grass seed so will grow some of that in his enclosure too once I get it.

I myself have kidney stones occasionally and my doctors told me to avoid oxalates too and to make sure to get enough calcium and water and so I thought it was funny to learn tortoises have to follow the same guidelines. :D 20180222_101102.jpg

Just some updates and more pics. His indoor enclosure is now 2ft by 3ft. Since he's only in it at night, I think it'll do for now. When it gets closer to winter (when he'll be in it more) and when he gets a bit bigger, I'll upgrade again. Currently it's heated by a CHE on one end. While transferring things around, I dropped/broke the UVB lightbulb so have to replace that. High temp is 100, low temp is 82, humidity when covered is 80. It's against an open window so he can get some UVB rays in the morning and I also figure the natural light would be good for his circadian rhythm. Oh, the bare spot in the corner is just where his water bowl usually goes, but I move it back and forth from his outdoor enclosure. I plan on making the substrate a bit deeper. So far he hasn't shown much interest in burrowing on his own but I want to keep the option available.

I upgraded his soaking pool. It used to be a plant saucer, but some days he would get impatient and try to escape after only a few minutes. It felt cruel trying to keep him in the saucer when he obviously wanted out, so I gave him the bigger pool so he would at least walk around for a bit. (Other times under the exact same circumstances he'd stay in the saucer 20+ minutes, so I know its not a problem with the temperature.) I think the opaque sides help too, since he doesn't want to climb out and explore. I also put a rock there for him to climb on so he knows dry land is available. I think it will be cute watching him grow into it.

I've decided to regularly take some close ups of his shell so I can monitor for pyramiding and learn how it grows. Before I got to this forum, I thought the shell grew by progressively adding more and more scutes to the sides rather than the scutes themselves getting bigger around the edges!

Letting you guys know that I am SO OPEN to constructive criticism. His health is more important than my feelings, so don't be afraid to call me out on something.

Wow, very smart and yes, smarter than the average bear by far! Impressive attitude!

I am not an expert, just a guy who's had lots of turtles....so read the care sheets, especially for your little guy and take their advice over mine...always...lol

I think he's fine in there for a while......nicely laid out but not sure he needs a constant source of H2O. Seemed to cause issues in Clemson

I was lucky enough to have Clemson for many years and he was a large sulc. After fighting it for a time, I stopped providing a source for water on a regular basis and his health improved. Their ability to preserve moisture by multiple solutions ensure that they really can get all they need from plants, and they don't need to be succulents, although those are great for special treats or "enrichment" items.

That is one cute little guy!
