Hi all,

I’ve just adopted these three tortoises from an old man due to him not being able to care for then anymore.

I want to give these tortoises the best care they deserve, but I am hoping for your guys help as I’m new to this!

I have no idea what breed of tortoise they are or their sex, and of course that is very important to know. Does anyone know what breed of tortoise they could be? This way I can research and determine the best care routine for them.

Thank you so much for your help and any tips!

**I can post better photos of these guys if it would help, just let me know.

Thank you, Natalie.

Hi Natalie, and welcome!

Their "species" is Testudo horsfieldii, or more commonly called Russian tortoises. Very hardy and quite personable. They do better when kept outside (but I realize the weather isn't always good for that). We can tell you their sex if you show us their tails.

They appear to be somewhat young and still growing. Any idea of their age?

Here is some care info for them:

Hello Yvonne, thank you for responding to my post and for clarifying the species and for the info! :) I have just taken some photos, please let me know if these are ok - only one of them had their tail "out" (that is the larger tortoise). If these are photos are no good i can try and take better ones with their tails out. Thank you!!

Hi Tom! Thank you for the info, i shall look into this! They were bought from the pet shop in Feb 2012 - So six years ago. Apparently they were very small when first bought, so not sure exactly how old they were when sold but i'm guessing quite young.

All of the tortoises in those photos look male to me, but I could be mistaken.
