It looks like a type of Radiant Heat Panel . I use one for my "Ackie" and really like it ! I see no reason it wouldn't work , in fact I am putting a bigger one in Speedy's night box before next winter . Here is a pic of mine to compare . :)

Does it read the ambient temp at 80, or whatever you keep yours at? I’m worried about how to know it’s keeping it warm enough.

It would depend on the enclosure size . For my Ackie he just needs a warm spot to go at night . They are on timers , when his heat / basking lamp goes off , his RHP comes on ! You should probably have it on a thermostatic control . I use a 1000 watt Zilla temp . controller for Speedy . you might also want to invest in a lazer temp gun , I wouldn't be without one for reptiles , they look like this ;

My "Critters" are older , so I give them the opportunity to "thermo regulate" a big word that means go where they are most comfortable ! :D Your little guy needs your help until he gets older and figures all this stuff out . Put your temp senser in the coolest spot in your enclosure (furthest from the heat source) and keep it at 80 F
