Inactive?

Milo, my Russian tortoise, sometimes is really inactive. He just eats then burrows and sleeps under the heat lamp or in his hide. What is normal tortoise behavior? How does yours act?

I’ve had him for a month. He’s from a pet store so I don’t know his age.

I hope he doesn’t have any parasites but I’m planning to get a fecal exam done soon this month or next.

If your baby is young they will do that. They typically get more active as they get older remember they live many years.

As mentioned above, the enclosure often dictates tortoise behavior. Can we see some pictures of your setup; then we can give better feedback.

Are all of your temps correct? Measured with the IR gun that is recommended?

My torts day goes something like this:

7am lights go on, after it warms up he then appears from under the substrate and warms up under the lamp. (My night temps are down to around 65f)

9am he is then soaked for 30 mins. This really seems to wake him right up and once soaked he goes back into his viv and has food.

Pretty much after that he is basking and sleeping the whole day, he may venture and have some more food a couple of times but he does not venture far at all. In fact he does not even go in the cooler end of the viv at all, my temps are 80f so I don’t think it’s too cold I think he is just a baby and they like to sleep and stay really warm.

At about 6pm he then burrows back down into the substrate and at 7pm I turn off all lights and heat.
