Hi, I am having a friend build me a large tortoise table for my two tortoises (yes they will be housed separate! ) i’m trying to figure out what we should use to seal the flooring so the wood does not mold and can withstand the humidity for my baby Sulcata. It’s going to be an L-shaped enclosure and I kind of left the creativity up to him. I just told him everything needs to be tortoise friendly. I was thinking of using this. IMG_1279.jpg
Does anyone have any thoughts or can give me any advice on what to do. I’m on a strict budget. He is building the cage from scratch. It will be a closed chamber eventually. Please any comments will help. Is their a particular caulking that should be used? I’ve read many threads on here and I’m still nervous for my torts :( please help.

I’ve seen where a lot of people have used the lumber seal you posted or the kennel seal made by the same company. I’ve heard mixed things about it though. I used silicone caulk on every seam and joint inside my enclosure and then did two coats of resin on all the entire inside surface. I did thicker coats on the bottom and lower sides. So far it’s been working very well but it’s only been set up for a couple of months. People with more experience with building and whose cages have been set up for years will have better advice, I’m sure.

You can get this at Home Depot. Mix in small batches and work fast. Also let it sit for at least 3 days to air out and completely cure. You can use a roller to spread it on like a paint. I painted the inside of my enclosure before putting the resin over it because I’m not a fan of the unfinished wood look.

It does make the inside look glossy, but I painted mine black underneath and it’s really not that bad. If that’s not something you like, you may want to go a different route though.
