A neighbour found it in the road and put it in a bucket of water we have now rescued it and hope it gets on with our current tortoise. Can anyone help me with its species though. It is the smaller tortoise in the picture. Toby is our 3.5 year old Spur thighed.

You should so not house them together....the outsider is significantly bigger...and is now intruding on the small tortoise and what he sees as him space, not a fair thing to do to the smaller one. The outsider may very well have been simply on it way from one place to another when your friend abducted it and plopped it in a bucket of water? Perhaps the best thing to do is to set up a separate space for the larger tort and let it stay for a bit to make sure interacting with your captive tort did not cause it any damage and then let the tortoise go again where your friend took it from...

It will not "get on" with your other tortoise. It will almost certainly be bullied to death by it because of their size difference. If you want to have both, they need separate enclosures ASAP.

Speaking of enclosures, that enclosure is much too small for even one tortoise. They should each have a 8'x4' enclosure or larger. Also, that substrate is not suitable for tortoises. Replace it with fine grade orchid bark or coco coir.

Its very dangerous to introduce a wild caught tort to your tort, as you never know what they could be carrying. Please separate immediately. Taylor has given you some good tips; please read through our care sheets and come back with any questions!

My question was mainly what breed is the new one. That photo is not the full enclosure, only 1 corner and he usually only stays in here at night. Our area is quite built up so we presumed it was a released pet tortoise as it seems very friendly but we have only known it for 24 hours. It is certainly better than the bucket of water it was in! This substrate was from a tortoise specialist here in Dubai, and was for while I waited for coco coir to grow in a bucket. We cannot get orchid bark out here. I am following the care sheet for spur thighed as found on here. The wood shavings are what I could get while I investigate different stockists here. I used aspen at home too.

I'll send a shout-out to @HermanniChris to see if he knows what species the smaller tortoise is.
