Hi there, I'm Jeannie. I live in far east Mesa, Arizona. Yesterday I saved a small tortoise when he was crossing my street. I'm going to build him an enclosure in my back yard and get to know him. He has some paint on his shell and I'm wondering if or how I can safely remove it. Really don't want to start off our friendship with anything distressing.

Welcome. Before you get too attached to your rescued tortoise, you might first want to check all around with your neighbors, Craigs List, etc to see if anyones pet escaped. Your new tort, might easily be someones longterm buddy that magically escaped.
Good luck, try to upload some pix so we can get an ID.

Paint definitely sounds like someone else’s pet. Great job saving him but post around I’m sure someone is heartbroken! And hey if you like the little guy get your own you have tons of great breeders out that way.

I have checked with them and made fliers also, but want him to be comfortable in the mean time. Its really kind of odd because exactly one year ago a large female tortoise wondered into my yard and stayed for 4days before moving on. The very next day her owner came here looking for her and said she was looking for someplace to lay her eggs. I thought that it was strange that she didn't have a spot at home for her to lay them.

I had a Manouria female here for about 10 years. Every year she was fine nesting in the same spot, but about two years ago I noticed she was restless. They get that way right before nesting. I saw her pacing the yard everytime I passed by her area. The other female in that yard was laying in a corner right up against the fence. A couple times as I passed by I saw the first female on the other female's back, with her front legs reaching for the top of the fence. I still kick myself every time I think about this. I should have moved that other female away from the fence, because eventually the first female disappeared.

You just never know what makes a settled tortoise decide to leave the territory.

I live in Tucson, Arizona and from my experience everyone and there mother will contact you if you post it on Craig’s list or even ask around. People will lie and say it is theirs because everyone around here wants a tortoise. Make them confirm the paint colors, approximate weight, or what the tortoise looks like so you don’t have a tortoise burglar on your hands lol. Good find!

Yes i agree. It’s best to just check your local CL ads for anyone reporting a lost pet tort.
