I just purchased this Eastern Box Turtle from a reputable online reptile seller. She is a good weight. Active. I am letting her settle in for a few days before i feed her, but as soon as i soaked her she took a long drink. The only thing troubling me is these strange patches she has on both of her sides. They are in pretty much the same spot on her either side. Just between the front and back legs but somewhat deep into the joint fold of her back legs. Here are some pics. One is a dull brown to orange color. The other looks like a wound just below the skin. Any ideas of what they could be?

It's raw flesh. Who knows how it happened, but for now you have to be sure flies don't lay eggs on it. I would keep a goodly glob of first aid ointment on it. Inspect the turtle closely to make sure there isn't a sharp edge to the shell that could be causing it.. Also, it MAY have been caused by an over excited, ambitious breeder, scratching her with his back claws as he tries to hang on.

Great news! I was worried. Any particular type of ointment? Like Neosporin?

Any over the counter antibiotic.
She really pretty.
There's no reason to wait too offer her food. Chances are the breeder may not have fed her a day or so before shipping to try and save on her soiling her shipping box.

Thanks everyone who responded. I emailed pictures to the company. They ate sending me an ointment for her skin. Hopefully if it was from rough mating, the stress of going from that to being shipped cross country is not too much on her. For now she is alone in a 32 square foot outdoor enclosure. I only want to give her the best life possible.

She hasn’t had much of an appetite so far. But the weather has been particularly cold and i’m sure she has had stress. Hopefully a few more days in the enclosure will have her relaxed and hungry. I am going to buy some more earthworms tomorrow for that tempting wiggle.
