Well I guess it's about time I introduced myself. I'm Rita. I am from MA. We are about to get our first tortoise sometime end of July. It's a Hermans (THHerc). I found a great breeder on this forum (Chris Leone) and he will be sending a hatchling our way. I've been reading as much as possible in this forum for the last 3-4 months. I am so excited but also nervous at the same time. I feel confident that I can give him a great diet. No shortage of weeds here and I am an avid gardener and already have several plants that are healthy for him to eat. Even in the winter I already have plant racks and grow lights so I won't have a problem growing him what he needs. My biggest concern is heat and humidity. I know how important it is, especially when they are young. So I'm thinking of building a closed chamber to start him in. If anyone has any experience raising Hermans hatchlings in a closed chamber give me a shout! I would love to hear any tips that have been useful. In the meantime I'm going to continue to read as many threads as I can.

Hi, and welcome!

You might want to talk to Chris about the closed chamber idea. Usually, when we talk about closed chambers here on the forum, it's for leopards and sulcatas. I'm not sure the Hermanni will need a closed chamber.

That’s what I was wondering. I have noticed that most of the threads about closed chambers have been for leopards, sulcatas and redfoots. I believe that Chris mentions a Rubbermaid tub setup on his website. I’ll go back and re read his care info. I’ll definitely contact him as well with questions.

Hi Rita.
I think closed chambers are good for all young tortoise species. I grow my two Testudo Hermanni in a closed chamber too and they are healthy and grow like weeds..

and that is their home, a closed chamber
