Hello! I’m absolutely thrilled to be picking up my box turtle, Fisher Cat, today! We are so lucky to have tons of wild turtles in NC, but that also means lots that are sick or injured. NCSU has a fantastic turtle rescue program within their veterinary school. They take in sick/injured box and water turtles, give them the medical care they need, then have local volunteers foster them until they are ready to be released back into the wild. They also find permenant homes for the turtles that won’t be able to survive in the wild due to their injuries. After months of waiting, it’s finally our turn to foster one of these monsters!

We currently have an adult redfoot (don’t worry, he and Fisher Cat will not be hanging out together), but this will be our first box turtle. I just wanted to say hello and share my excitement! I suspect pictures will follow later....

So glad to have TFO (i.e. you all!) as a resource for research and the questions that will come up. Thank you!

Sounds like a great program. Sure hope they kept tabs of where each turtle was picked up so they can be released in the same area. If they aren't, they will spend their life time trying to get back to their territory.
Good luck with your rescue and the rehab. Don't forget to share pics.

Meet Fisher Cat! He was hit by a car, and those awesome vets at NCSU put his shell back together again (best they could!). I highlighted the spots where they performed surgery. He is adorable, and that mouth is always open! He seems to be having som issues with his back legs. The vet student confirmed with the vet that he DOES have usage of his back legs, so he could just be being a stubborn turtle. Something I’ll be keeping a close eye on, though! He should be with me for a couple of months. In love already!
