I was thinking of just making a system with a pump and timer has anyone made such a system using items commonly found at hardware store?

Do you have well water?

If not, I would just advise you to find a good diaphragm pump (I believe that's what MistKing uses) that can create enough pressure. Apparently one issue with using the tiny sprayers is them becoming clogged with water deposits. I use the sprayers for irrigating plants; however, I have well water so I have the lines hooked right up to plumbing. If you have city water, you will need to filter it first.

Do you have hard water. Won’t that plug your nozzles?

I think this all depends on the type of nozzle, at least the relationship between size and how long it takes to clog. I have used larger spray nozzles, than the tiny atomizers some use. Apparently mine are still considered "atomizing" but are adjustable, like the tip of a spray bottle head. I've been using them for months, with no clogging yet. If you run too many on a line, though, you will find yourself constantly adjusting so that they all work. I have them in my baby enclosure, the adults winter enclosure, and under a few trees in the outdoor pen to avoid watering the blueberries.

I couldn't tell you how hard the water is out of the faucet. I know it is not as hard as city water, as there are no visible deposits, but I remember testing calcium levels years ago and it was notable.

It may not be a huge issue, even if they do clog. If it is only every couple months, then it may be worth it. Just soak the nozzles in vinegar, and it should remove the mineral deposits.

Also, since I've always raised tortoises with well water, I have never been faced with this, BUT, is there concern of using city water with tortoises? If there is chlorine, and heavy metals in it, I would be cautious. Someone else should be able to shed light on this.

Below is the kit I used. It comes with drippers too. I've purchased a few of them. If you go the DIY route, you will need to figure out how much pressure is needed. I haven't looked closely, but haven't seen anything stated on the below kit yet.
