I finally got my own yellowfoot and he is a hot mess. Check him out. He's about 12 and only robs. He has a deformed head with tiny flattened ear drums, only one open-ish nostril and a badly overgrown lower beak. He's also skinny.

About 60% of what he puts in his mouth to eat gets pushed back out by his short tongue.

I've got my work cut out for me.

Oh, and he hates me. 0722181722.jpeg0721181251a.jpeg0719181757i.jpeg0713181614_HDR.jpeg

Aside from the beak I think he looks great! Can’t see his ear drums and nose but maybe a beak trim will help? Congrats on rescuing him!!

His head looks like the description they give of the "true Amazon Basin" yellow foot as opposed to a "regular" yellow foot.

The "rescue" credit goes to Northwest Tortoise in Kennewick, WA - I believe she said he was surrendered because he wasn't thriving with other tortoises. No s***, he's super aggressive and territorial. She had him for a year trying to get him healthy enough to adopt out and I had been doing transports for her and mentioned, "Oh I would really like a YF someday." and then she started telling me to come get my tortoise. It took a bit to get organized and set up transport but here he is. I've got fewer torts so I can take the time to work on his beak and get him feeding himself better.

Also re: Amazon vs. Regular - I didn't realize there were subspecies of YF like the RFs - guess I'll go look him up. He looks SO SO much better now that I've been soaking him and oiling his skin. He had a ton of dry crust. He doesn't seem to go in the water on his own, but he will sit under a sprinkler all day.

Uhhh well, I have been gone a few months and should probably update you all....there are 7 redfoots and a YF now. I need to get a good thread going with loads of pics. The YF came with a "Here I can't find a home for this one either" freebie and she is a big beautiful smooth female who is super friendly. I'm waiting to figure out the "flaw" that made her end up in my care.

Poking at him today I'm realizing his mouth is never completely closed because he is a mouth breather. I believe his nostrils are completely useless.

Now I need to head to the vet to determine what's going on with his "teeth" it could be dry or it could be mouthrot.

Sorry if these all come up sideways, as per usual. 0723181841c.jpeg0723181838a.jpeg0723181838c.jpeg0723181841b.jpeg0723181839.jpeg

Don't judge my photography skills, this was free hand with a cell phone and no assistant.

Poor boy. Must have trouble breathing while eating. No wonder he was aggressive. Time to make him weed smoothies? I don't know that they are subspecies or if the pet trade animals just got smaller and rounder in captivity. If you do a search, there is info out there.

Per my consult with a vet I'm going to probe his nostrils to see if they are really small or just gunked/scarred closed from a decade of fighting with a tank mate in a glass tank.
