I am currently a residential painter and the money is just not in this trade. I am about to get my painters license and will get it but I don't feel this is the right direction for me. My friend recently came back from the Army and opened my eyes to Union Jobs. If your wondering why I didn't know about them is mainly because I come from a poor family with no one being educated. I didn't go to college due a personal and financial situation. I have been talking to some guys in the IBEW (electricians union) and most seem to be happy with what they earn and they enjoy their job. I applied but am kinda in a fork in the rode. Union, painters business, or something different. I dont mind going to college to get a certificate but mainly I dont want to go to college because of math. I am horrible when comes to math.

What I am asking is for some advice if you would like to comment. I'm looking for a career not a job. Something with benefits maybe a city job. The union guys also told me about a certificate LA Trade School offers and I have been calling & emailing for information but haven't received anything from them. If you know a job please comment below. Thank you.

Plumbers, electrician, are good union jobs in my city. Garbage man for the city also good money and benefits.
My son just got a job working for a plumbing company. He has a little experience working a couple times with my nephew. He will be able to take classes to get his plumbing license and the company will pay for it. also with a electrician or plumbing license you can do side jobs and fix your own stuff.
Welder is another.

I second plumbers and electricians. My husband has a year of college and is the head of instrument and electrical at a plant. My brother in law is a plumber and does well. My brother is an electrician and now works as a board operator for the same plant where my husband works. They make plastic or something that I know has to do with diapers and sticky notes.

My dad had an education degree but retired from Exxon doing stuff not related to his degree.

I am a HUGE fan of Mike Rowe. Check him out. His foundation/organization gives scholarships for trade schools. So many jobs available that young people think are beneath them because high a chools now push college and universities so much that they don’t thing trade jobs are good enough.

I am not a fan of trade "certificates" if there is not on the job training occurring concurrently. Someone that pays attention can learn more in a few months than someone going to classes for 12-18 months. I think you should find a company/the union and start there. I think the union has its own program that you have to attend.

There are plenty of electricians that aren't good at math, but its far easier if you are.

Welder is a good one. Especially if you get into the specialized areas.

I spent a whole career working for Ma Bell. Great place to work, many different types of jobs, and on the job training. Worked closely with P.G.&E. and they're another great employer with on the job training, good benefits and many different types of jobs.

Well that would all depend on what type/amount of money you consider good money?

If you don't actual work then I suggest Masonry. That's usable in your own personal life as well as on the job... Easy to be self-employed doing masonry as well.

Sheet Metal workers, Elevator mechanics, Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, Steamfitters, Crane Operators, Insulators, (the one I joined 50 years ago) all have apprenticeship programs that take from 3 to 5 years until you will get your mechanics card. While you are an apprentice you may not have a choice of who you work for,, you may have to change employers to get the benefit of different aspects of what ever trade you are in. You will most likely have to go to school at night at least once a week.( which you don't get paid for) Why pay to go to college when you can get paid while learning a Trade.

Thank you everyone for the replys. I really appreciate it.

Learn to run a business, even if you don't have one yet. If you can learn to run Quickbooks, you would be indispensable at any company, and it also helps with personal finances.

The skills you acquire will be useful for the rest of your life as well. This should be what the future of "Home Skills" education in high school should be.

My biggest regret was that i never learned how to do minor accounting in order to start a business, luckily i'm marrying someone who is a whiz at it.

The internet has opened up every opportunity to develop a craft or a hobby and to be able to market that skill to customers.

Never stop learning, and maybe something you discover later in life will become both your legacy and your passion, and the ability to efficiently run a business will facilitate that growth.

I was a residential painter for 12 years. The problem there is...anybody can paint. Not well really, but well enough to under bid you and get the jobs by offering a lower amount to do it. They're a dime a dozen and theyll do it every time..so I only do that as a part time gig because I actually enjoy painting. However I also work for a major printing company. That's another trade where you could start as a janitor and work your way up. I know our press men make minimum 27.00 per hour which for where I live, that's a decent days pay.
Think about what's practical for you and what will work for where you want to live. Lots of people out there with useless degrees and debt because the work they went to school for just isnt there. Good luck
