I am actually driving with my family as I type. Tuleo (who turned 4 in July!) in chillin’ in his huge tub in the back and I am going to be pursuing the forum for heated shed ideas for living in cold weather. I actually toyed with rehoming him given the climate change but I just can’t do it. I love him too much! BUT, with THAT! I need to build him some amazing digs, and shall do so. I’m pretty sure the first winter he will just winter in the basement while we make the plans, etc. etc. We’re playing it by ear! A lot of the reason we are playing it by ear is due to the fact that six months ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer (and I’ve never even smoked.) It’s metastasized quite a bit but I’m hanging strong! Hope everyone is well!!

We will be state neighbors and yet enemies if you like any of their sports. Chicago and Wisconsin/Milwaukee big rivals. You will be known as a cheese head but it could be worse lol.
Seriously, good luck on your move and your health. Drive careful. We have a few members with sullies in WI and other northern states so it's not hard to do, just more costly. A well insulated heated shed will work well for you sully. You could also make part of a garage his winter home or even the basement lf it has easy access to the outside. Sulcatas can and will go out into the snow as long as they can go in on their own to warm up.

Best of luck to you and your family. I'm sure Tuleo will be happy to just be with his family. Take care.:)

108D4786-A05B-49FC-BD50-B76745CAE8FE.jpeg Thank you everyone. I remember Bob’s adventures in the snow, so I absolutely know it can be done and we’ve actually been researching ways to do it for years, but nothing will be really concrete until we find a house and I can see the space. My plan is to have a heated shed as well is a greenhouse to extend his warmth in the fall months. It’s going to be pricey but worth it (he’s a wee bit spoiled!)

I'm so happy that "Tuleo" has such a caring tort mom. So many tortoises, as well as other pets, are treated as disposable assets rather than the family members they deserve to be. Should you find the need to winter-over Tuleo in a basement, remember that those cold concrete floors won't warm up to the ambient basement temperature. Since he can't hibernate, keep him warm and happy. I pray that you'll beat that nasty stage 4 cancer. It can be done! A peaceful move and transition to you.

Thank you so much!! Yes, I know all about temps and humidity, we have had Tuleo since he was five weeks old and he just turned four! He wouldn’t be on a concrete floor, we would definitely have some type of flooring /pig blanket/something or another. He’ll be toasty! I know Tom’s care sheets by heart...lol. I do need to learn more about really winterizing so I am reading all I can. That’s why I don’t even want to plan for a winter home being ready this year, I want to do it right and give us some time to build the proper set up!
And you’re right, so many people do dispose of them so easily. I can’t believe how many people see Tuleo or read our adventures and just want a tortoise without any idea of what they are getting into. I have talked so many people out of getting one. They are definitely not disposable pets!
