Hey guys, and hello to Switzerland! What are the Toblerones like there? I live in England and don't really know any secondary languages, I might be able to stumble through some basic Spanish and British sign language but apart from that I'm stumped, thank goodness for sign language! Do you have to heat up any hibernating torotises in Swiss winters ad they can freeze below zero? I have the opposite problem here and my Hermanns came out of hibernation early last year due to a warm spell in the winter!

Hello :) my tortoises are not pyramiding, their shell is smooth but the picture was taken with my phone with sun and shadows lol It is "funny" because in french when a tortoise is pyramiding we call it "tobleronnée" like the chocolate Toblerone ! it is cool for sign language. They freeze below zero but the temperature of the ground where they hibernate doesn't reach negative temperatures. I let them hibernate in their garden for three weeks then I put them in a hibernation chamber with garden soil, oak leaves and plexiglass if needed in the garage. I have a thermometer and hygrometer. The temperature should always be between 2 and 8 °C and the humidity 80%. I don't let the temperature and the humidity go down or up. How long do your tortoises hibernate ? Normally, three months is enough. Here I have also to pay attention when the temperature gets warmer because where I live we can win or loose sometimes 10°C (outside) in two days but in the garage the temperature varies less. I know some people use a special fridge for hibernation to be sure the temperature is fixed ( I did not try it).

My tortoise is meant to hibernate for 6 months because he is a grown-up now at seven, I think last year he only hibernated for two months, I think he came out before the new year! Normally the temperature is below 10°C in winter; it later snowed whilst he was indoors in a little enclosure!

You did not make any mistakes. And by all means speak in french if you need to. We will just have to get Reptilony or google to translate for us, if we need to. And Welcome to TFO.
