Hi I am in Phoenix and I am new to being a tortoise owner. I went through and read some forums and got a much better idea of the right things to do for my guy. Mine is roaming the yard with my boxer who is very curious about Buzz Lightyear but leaves him alone. In fact Buzz sometimes follows the dog around.

Your dog should never be allowed around your tortoise. It is very stressful for the tortoise, and extremely dangerous. In fact, your tortoise “following” your dog was actually him trying to chase it out of its territory.

The previous owner had dogs and my boxer is sweet and just curious about him but doesn't terrorize the big guy. The tortoise may occasionally draw his head in when Bruce runs by chasing the hummingbirds but other than that he is not stressed. I have spent the every night outside with him and he is a happy camper.

Unfortunately that is not possible and we did bring the two together before we moved the big guy to his new home. My back yard is a habitat with big block walls and secured gates. He has a large grass area as well.

As sweet as your dog may be, your tortoise should be nowhere near him. Your tortoise definitely doesn’t enjoy it’s company, and I assure you it is stressful. In addition, you already posted about your tortoise eating dog poop, which is one of the many reasons they should not be sharing an enclosure.

Your tortoise needs it’s own enclosure that your dog does not have access to. Sulcatas are very territorial, and do not enjoy sharing their territory.

Tortoises need their own space that is not used or shared by dogs or people. The sweet loving family dog is one of the greatest threats to pet tortoises. They almost always end up chewing up the tortoise, and the people always immediately say, as if on cue, "he's never done that before…"

Please don't learn the hard way at the tortoise's expense. Do not allow the dog access to the tortoise, and create a separate enclosure area for the tortoise where the dog does not do its business or have access to.

. . . or you can do like I do with my 70lb dog, Misty - simply don't allow the dog to go outside by itself. Misty only goes outside when I'm able to be out there with her. I have many, many tortoises and she doesn't pay any attention to them. But I don't take any chances, as I operate a tortoise rescue, and at least once a year I take in a dog chewed tortoise where the owner said, "He has never paid attention to the tortoise before."
