Good morning! I am new to this forum. I have a 25 year old desert tortoise named Lucy. We recently adopted two senior miniature dachshunds. Elvis is 14 and Gracie is 12. Elvis will not leave Lucy alone. There is a gentleman on this website name "Tom" and he had some great advice...however I would like to reach out to him as we are located in Southern California. I would be interested in his professional services to help us with this issue. Again, this is all new to me. I would like Tom to contact me. Or if someone can provide me with his contact information.

Thank you. And I apologize if this is not the protocol.

Best

Hello and welcome Cindy. I'll send you a message.

For those reading your thread, the simple answer is to fence of the tortoise's area and not allow the dogs access. In general, this is how it should be all the time. Dogs and tortoises should not share a yard. Tortoises need their own space.

Hi Cindy, and welcome to the Forum!

You are to be commended for adopting an older dog and giving it a chance at a new life. Good for you!

It should be fairly easy to fence off a portion of the yard for the tortoise, as dachies can't jump too high.

Welcome.
There are actually more reasons for keeping them separated than you might initially think.
Dogs just see tortoises instinctively as a chew toy.(sometimes out of the blue. With no prior warning) Dogs love to eat tortoise poop and tortoises eat dog poop. Many dog medications are deadly to tortoises. And nothing good will come from a dog eating tortoise poop.
Also, at the very least, a lone, solitary animal like a tortoise may become stressed out about a dog being around.
I'm sure I'll think of more reasons when I log out.

Good morning all.

I would like to add, the tortoise does in fact have her very own space in the backyard. She actually has her own secure designated area. When we are hanging out in the backyard, as we watch Elvis & Lucy is when we see the two of them interact. If we aren't in the backyard, Lucy is put back in her secure area. We have done this from the get go. We just wanted to be able to hang out "with the family". Apparently, that is not going to happen. Thank you all for your kind responses.
