Hi Everyone, i have a basking bulb and uvb, one at each end of his home.. but he never seems to visit the uvb end. How do you ensure they are getting proper uvb with a spot light bulb they never go under? I have moved them both to one end which makes the other completely dark now but i still dont think hes getting enough benefit.... suggestions?

What type of UVB bulb are you using? Coil bulbs such as the one I linked below can and have been known to cause severe eye problems in tortoises.

A UVB strip fixture and long tubed bulb is much safer and will cover more area. What the length of your enclosure? 3 ft?

You can find slightly cheaper, similarly built fixtures elsewhere such as hardware stores and online retails like amazon.

You may also want to consider upgrading your existing thermometer and hygrometer reader to a more accurate weather-branded model. Those tiny little pet branded gauges (digital or analog) can become quite inaccurate with time.

A flat piece of rock and slat would make a nicer feeding surface. The raised lip on the feeding dishes can make it hard for them to climb in and out.

A plant saucer would also make a better water dish than the one you're currently using. The example linked below can be submerged into the substrate to allow easy traversing. It's heavy enough to prevent tip-overs. It's big enough to self soak and you can also add medium sized pebbles to prevent your young tortoise from possibly drowning themselves if your water level gets too high:

What are you temperature zones and humidity level? Basking, warm side, cool side, and overnight low? Is the tortoise in your profile picture a Hermann? An open caged enclosure such as the one you're currently using may actually become too cold and dry depending on the condition of the room it is housed in.

As mentioned above, they maybe avoiding it. The best type of UVB is the sun. When my tortoise was little, I tried to get him out for at least 15-20 minutes each day, unless it was cold. In his tank, I had half the tank with a mercury vapor bulb on one end and a ceramic heat emitter in the middle.

Your setup looks appealing, but needs some changes. This open top is letting out too much heat that the tortoise needs.

I think its preferable to have the UVB light paired with the basking area, with a separate light source for ambient lighting.
