Hey everyone i have a hatchling around 6-9 months old named Tortie. We currently have him in a vivarium in my living room hes around 2&1/2 inches long (we measured the underside of his shell) and we are assuming hes a boy as we know hes too young to officially sex!
Just wanted to check im doing right by him as this is a whole new world to me. I have store bought tortoise terrain as his substrate and feed him on pellets one day and plants weeds and we give him some broccoli and kale on the other days. I have calcium powder which i lightly dust onto the fresh foods every other day. We have a hollowed out log to provide some shade and i bath him every other day. I spray his enclosure daily with water to add humidity. I asked in the shop where we bought him from about the moss but was told that hes a desert tortoise and the moss will keep it too humid? And this has confused me as ive read about shell pyramiding and one of the ways to combat this is to have humidity and its one of the reasons they burrow in the wild! Am i wrong? Other wise he seems very settled enjoys his food walks around often. IMG_1538497616.099804.jpgIMG_1538497653.612694.jpgIMG_2255.jpgIMG_1538497707.477831.jpg

Hi, and welcome!

Please go to the Forum's home page and read all the 'pinned' threads at the top of the Sulcata section. There's a whole new way of taking care of baby sulcata tortoises. The "old way" is OUT!

Your tortoise is already pyramiding, so you need to change the substrate and get humidity up to 80-100% ASAP. The substrate you have now is too dry, and a huge impaction risk.

You can use a mix of cypress mulch and coconut coir. They sell the cypress mulch at gardening stores in big bags. Just make sure there is no additives in it. You should also be able to find the coconut coir there. If not, many pet stores sell it in brick or loose form. Both of these hold moisture really well. Add water to both the substrates and mix together. You have to mist the substrate daily to keep the humidity up. Invest in something like these to get an accurate reading of the temperature and the humidity. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Komodo-Com...8501774&sr=8-2&keywords=hygrometer+with+probe. I also do not see water dish inside the enclosure. You want to have a water dish available for him at all time. Use something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Prosper-Pl...sr=1-4-catcorr&keywords=terracotta+pot+saucer. Bury it a little into the substrate to make it easy for your tortoise to walk in and out off. You might want to look into the list of recommended food also as I don't think they should be eating broccoli. This is my post, I also recently received my first tortoise https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/n...ram-com-sonnythetortoise.169936/#post-1664848. Hope this helps!

Thanks very much we was told not to have a water dish as they will sit in them and get shell rot and also evacuate into the water and then drink it making them sick ‍♀️ i have just put a temporary dish in for now weve only had him about 3-4 weeks

From my understanding the "shell rot" theory is not true. It is true they defecate in the water occasionally. Mine usually does that when he is getting his daily 30 minute soak.

Weve just introduced a temporary water dish till i can get to the garden shop tomorrow and get the correct substrate and other little bits for him i usually bathe him every other day but will change him to daily baths till hes a bit older i am so glad i found this forum you have all been so much help i just want whats best for tortie he already seems a lot happier just by the few small changes ive made! Hopefully i will have stopped any further pyramiding from happening and he starts to fully thrive thank you again for your help xx

Your going to do great! Your baby will appreciate the water dish and the substrate change. I’ve had two hatchlings since May and they are doing well. They get bathed and soaked daily plus have water dishes in their separate highly humid enclosures. They self soak in addition to my imposed soaks and they have no problems with their shell.
