Hello I’m kinda new to this whole site. So I have a tortoise that we have named Michelangelo, I have had him for 5 yrs, we don’t know if he is a girl or boy, but none the less love it regardless of the sex. But I have became more curious how do you really determine what it could be, since it can b difficult as to what I have found online, also how do you know the age and also if it was wild caught etc, also adds on to the main question I have, I been noticing that under our tortoise’s neck it has became a light green, more like a light blade of grass green, is that due to he’s diet or age or should I b considered. Anything helps. I have looked many of these things up, but I don’t want to rely on different websites bc who knows if it’s accuate or what not. I rather get advice from actual real ppl and also experienced ones :)

1. Where did you obtain or purchase your tortoise from? The answer to this question, along with numerous pictures, may be helpful in determining whether your tortoise may be captive bred or wild caught.

2. Pictures, many pictures of your tortoise, his or her enclosure, and any issues you may have will help.

3. We have many up to date care sheet on most legal to own species of tortoises. The advice in this forum will generally be better and more accurate than any blog, social media site, YouTube channel or video, and any tortoise online retailer's listed care sheets.

Hi, and welcome! As has already been said, we need pictures of the tortoise - top and bottom, including the tail.

Hello, this is Michelangelo,
I have had him for 5yrs and just curious as
I’m wondering what sex he/she and if u can tell if he’s wild, or not.
I did get him from a pet store.
Also recently he is starting to get a light neon green under he’s neck..... any idea why? He eats a lot of greens, and some fruit, also I never hypernated.. (sry about spelling) but should I?

Hi, welcome!

It's a male and he is definitely wild caught.

The neon coloring might just be leftovers from the food, but I'd see what an expert would have to say. Also, I would stop feeding fruit. Stick to broadleaf weeds along with certain leaves and flowers.

Hibernation is optional. Some swear by it, while others don't and still have healthy tortoises. I'm not one to give hibernation advice, as I never have done so, but if you chose to, just know that there are many great resources here on the forum.

Hello and welcome!

I just took in a russian tortoise who has some bright green around his eyes. I took him in because he had been cared for very poorly so I'm not totally sure what has caused the green but I'm guessing it was either his poor diet or a bad UV bulb that he has been exposed to. The coil type uv bulbs can harm tortoise's eyes so that why I thought maybe the bulb. The green has faded a lot in the 3 weeks that I've had him. Not sure if this applies to you and your tortoise but if I were you I'd check these 2 links to see if you're doing everything right. Maybe you'll find the answer in here...

Also I looked at your tortoise's photo on your profile and it's a little blurry so I could be wrong but it looks like your tort's beak is very long. Maybe search the forum for beak length and see what you think. A trim might be in order.. or feeding on a flat stone or rough tile.
Hope you find all the info you need here. Happy torting!
