Years ago, when I was in an internet bird club, we had this thing. . .

Someone bought a plush bird (if we want to do this, we'd use a stuffed, plush turtle/tortoise). We had a list of participant's names and addresses. The plush animal would be given to one of the participants and they would take it with them wherever they went for a week, taking pictures of the animal with people they met while they were out and about - to the zoo, to the store, to Petsmart, watching fireworks on the 4th of July, or sitting on Santa's lap, etc. While the animal is in your care, you would buy an inexpensive gift - can be anything you want to buy. Some of the participants got real creative and even dressed their animal in some sort of outfit for the pictures. At the end of the week, you would send the gift to the admin of the game, and send the animal on to the next person on the list, and so on, until he spent a week with everyone on the list. The pictures would be posted weekly in the travelling tortoise thread. The person holding the tortoise would only have the next person on the list's name and address.

After all the gifts are in, a name would be drawn from the list of all the participants and that person would receive all the gifts that had accumulated.

If we want to do this, we'd need to have a small group of people volunteering to be in charge, maybe three or four, and we'd have to get together online to set the rules.

Would there be an interest in doing this?

This sounds like fun, Yvonne. Living full-time in an RV, my wife and I have participated in a similar fun game with a teddy bear. We got to have him see us as we were at Bridal Vale Falls in Yosemite and the Florida Keys a few weeks later. Rather than gifts, we raised dollars for a selected charity. I'd love to help in any way that I may be helpful. Good idea. . .

Yvonne: I'm sure that there are many variations as to how to best work this, but this is how our group of about 45 families worked it: 1) a charity was selected by a common vote 2) the bear was elected to ride with the people who wagered the highest for each time period by a blind vote 3) the bear road for the selected time period and then was passed on to the next people in a new bidding. The bear was usually FedXed to the new winners. Wagering was augmented be having friends and family up the pot. Pictures were always posted on-line to keep the feaver hot. At the end, a new bidding war was to vote for the best picture/s of where the bear traveled. Prizes were awarded to the top three vote getters, and all prizes were were solicited from interested business. The top prize was a 3-day Mexican Riviera cruise . . . not too shabby. Nancy and I enjoyed our cruise very much. The funds were all donated to the CARE facility in Livingston, Tx. The bear now resides at that facility and is fondly remmembered as the CARE bear. This is how one group enriched their travels. It would be up to our forums to see what might fit our group. Our's was about having fun while finding our generousity.

Orv: That seems like a little too much for us. I'd like to keep it simple. But I do like the idea of incorporating a 'best picture' contest.

I sort of felt that it might be. I just outlined what one group of RVers worked out as best for us as we traveled. There are many directions to go with this.

Orv, this was done quite a few years ago, wasn't it?
While Pete and I were fulltiming in our bus, I think I remember "meeting" that teddy bear. I have no idea where it was or who it was riding with though.

That's why I thought we'd have the 'gifts' sent back to an Admin, while the stuffed animal gets sent on to the next member.

What if each gift went on with the animal and that person kept the gift. Each person gets a gift from the animals travels and the very last person sends the animal and gift onto the very first person that started it. The gifts should be little things like key chains or so that is normally bought as cheap souvenirs. This just keeps shipping/mailing costs down.
