I cannot figure how to use this forum on my smartphone.

My grandkids found this turtle. It has holes punched through its shell and nail polish on top, I got some of that off. Is this a turtle or a tortoise? I will try to post a pic but in case that won't work either I did use the pic as my avatar.

Thanks

I can't say what kind it is, but based on the webbing in the toes I'd say it's a species of turtle. Front markings look like a box turtle. Gorgeous shell!

Thank you for your reply! I spent a few minutes really looking him over and yes, a male box turtle. My husband and I are heading south in our RV so I just wasn't able to pick up decent WiFi and what not. I probably should release him but it will be out of his territory and winter is coming. No clue who did the shell damage and color and no clue how long he was captive, my grandkids had him for over a month, that I DO know and he was already damaged. Wonder if he would do ok in Louisiana?

Dunno. What area did you find it in?

Oh geesh...sorry...in southern Oklahoma
Lol. I'll answer that with a solid "no clue". I'm not familiar with the differences between the two regions. Perhaps someone with some familiarity will chime in for you.

Three toed box turtle. Native to Oklahoma but maybe someones escaped pet, but judging by the sound of it not the best owner anyway.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum! As Toddrick said, it is a three toe box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis)
