I was reading some posts where people were looking for help identifying types of box turtles. I never realize there were so many types of box turtle. I've always assumed my rescue was a three-toed because he has three toes on his hind feet. Now I'm wondering if that is correct.

Also, if different types live in a similar environment and crossed paths could they interbreed? I'm not planning on trying this! I was just curious if there were hybrid box turtles too. And if so is naturally occurring in the wild or would it is only be caused by human interference in captivity?IMG_20180830_183545.jpegIMG_20180830_183532.jpeg

You definitely have a three toed box turtle. There are several species of box turtle in North America. Where different species natural ranges overlap interbreeding can and does happen. Some of the scientific and even common names in the list below have been updated recently, but most people are slow to adopt the new names:

I’m fairly new to how many different types of box turtles there are and as I’m learning it’s crazy to think that there are so many! I never even thought of cross breeding either in the wild or captivity! I also have a box turtle rescue and though I had no idea when she was younger, it’s very clear now that she is a Florida box turtle.

Your guy looks great and so confident!! So nice to see!

He's definitely got some sass mixed in, and a ton of personality. When he wants something he wants it now and has no problem letting me know. Sometimes all he wants is out of his enclosure and then he makes straight for me, he'll either crawl in my lap or cozy up against my leg and hang out there for as long as I let him.

Hahahaha that’s awesome. My girl is all about her food and comes to the same spot every day to “remind me” that it’s time to eat. I love that they all have personalities. She’s my first turtle and I never thought they all had their own little quirks but only because I’m use to rescuing dogs. Turns out they aren’t that different and I end up spoiling them just the same.
