Dear turtle friends: our house and the turtle hospital went up in smoke Friday with no local help from firefighters. Many homes are lost in our neighborhood. It is a miracle that the turtle sanctuary is intact because the fire came through burning the chain link fence, trash cans, chicken houses (two lived with the turtles), plants, trees, anything it could attack. These are photos of the house. Miraculously, the two roosters survived, as did sulcatas, box turtles, Russians and many others. I had filled the pond to the brim before we evacuated as flames were bearing down. They all survived. Sadly, there were about seven fatalities in the main yard and all the hatchling turtles we rescued two years ago also died. The many others were secure in concrete housing with Hardy boards on top (flameproof). The animals showed signs of stress, we fed and watered them. All the hospital turtles - about 35 were in our cars along with the three cats. All the medical supplies, books and years of intake forms for the 4000 we rescued up in smoke. We spent the night in the Zuma Beach parking lot. We have no medical supplies or injectibles but are working to replace what we need for now. We will be creating a GoFundMe page shortly. Stay tuned and pray for us as we are still in trouble here
