We recently git a couple small Sulcatas and had them in a cement mixing tub. after looking on line about pyramiding I have decided on an enclosed chamber for the benefits of high humidity. I learned a lot on this forum and wanted to know if anybody sees any problems with my setup. There is a ceramic heater that on a thermostat that keeps a minumum temp of 80 and then I have a mega ray 70 watt for uvb plus another flood buld to get the hot spot ti the rught temp of high 90s. Humidity stays in the 80s and dips down to the 50s under the hot spot.20181113_170407.jpeg20181113_170537.jpeg20181113_170429.jpeg20181113_170449.jpeg20181113_170456.jpeg

Welcome to the forum!
You’re off to a great start, but some things need to be changed.

-tortoises, especially Sulcatas, are solitary, territorial animals that should never be kept in pairs. It is very stressful for them both, and it never ends well. They need to be separated.

-the metal mesh is blocking out most of the uvb from the light. You will likely have to cut out the mesh under it.

-if you are using a compact or coil uvb, it needs to be replaced with a tube type. Coils are extremely inefficient at producing uvb, and have been known to cause eye burns.

Please give these a read and come back with questions :)

I agree with @TechnoCheese and would also like to add:

Mercury vapor bulbs can and will cause pyramiding. They're also not very reliable in producing the right amount of UV(B) and heat for tortoises from hatchlings to adults. Many members of this forum have recently started to recommend against using mercury vapor bulbs because a number of experienced owners have confirmed these claims to be true for them after having housed tortoises with mercury vapor bulbs for many years in comparison to other heating fixtures.

A fine mesh grating like the one picture will effectively block out at least over 40-60% of all usable UV(B) rays. The rays that do pass through will come in small tiny splotches.

I personally belief the enclosure size is small for a single Sulcata hatchling. The largest cement mixing tub available in home depot 50" x 34" x 10" would've been a better choice in my opinion. You can easily build a frame and cover the tub with a clear plastic/greenhouse film to simulate a closed chamber setup. I think it would probably last a few months to a year before a sulcata hatchling outgrows it but it would still be a relatively affordable and portable choice.

I'm also not a fan of those dual lamp fixtures. They're nowhere near as effective as a large diameter brooder/work lamp fixture.
