I have a 5 year old hermanns tortoise who I am really worried about, she goes into her sleeping compartment for weeks on end and just scratches at the sides of her enclosure, and so isn’t properly hibernating but also isn’t coming out, warming up or eating and so Is loosing energy and fat reserves. I have gotten her out and offered her food and water but she doesn’t want anything she also has a very pale mouth. I am very concerned about her health.

Hi,

Just to be clear, are you trying to brumate your tortoise or not?

If you aren't, then we'll need to know the setup of your enclosure.

-What are the temperatures? (Basking, Cool Side)
-What's her diet?
-Are you providing UVB?

Best

-Thomas

Double check the temps and let us know what they are. Due too this you should not hibernate her this year. Keep lights on longer and make brighter if needed. Give her daily warm soaks and put piedialyte and puréed baby food carrots to help get her to hopefully wanting to eat.

I don’t really burnate my tortoise but when she wants she’ll go to sleep for about three weeks at a time. I’ll check he temperatures tomorrow. Could it be because the temperature is inconsistent because her enclosure is in the living room.

What are the actual ambient day and night temperatures and basking temperature? Average humidity level? How long is the basking light on during the daytime? Is there a source of UV light?
Tortoises don't hibernate when the temperatures, photoperiod and light intensity are at or near normal activity levels. However lack of acceptable levels of these elements, including excessive dryness will cause a tortoise to brumate of extended periods. This is very common when kept indoors through the drier, reduced lighting winter months.
