It's painfully obvious to me now,

Can we have a pic? Presumably you got a hatchling.... For those with more experience, when has the most vulnerable time passed for a Leopard, past when it is likely to live to adulthood?
In general, that ones that aren't going to make it stall at under or around 50 grams. Once they've passed the 50 gram mark and are steadily gaining weight, things should be okay.

Their most vulnerable time is right after hatching. Most breeders keep them too dry, outside too much, and don't soak often enough. They are really very sturdy and hardy if they are kept warm humid and hydrated in their first few weeks and months.

Good Morning (well where I am), what have you been feeding? I have a little one with similar eating and weight gain habits what really got him going was mazuri. I made sure to feed it 3 times a week and he started putting on weight and really perked up. Now he eats mostly greens but has mazuri once a week

I feed Mazuri and variety of broad leafed greens. Thank you for the reply

Yes. Every one will tell you that the carrot molecules are too big to be absorbed, but I'm telling you it works! If you faithfully soak three days in a row for at least a half hour you'll see an improvement after three days.
I've seen a boost for sure. Wondering if you repeat it or is it a one time shot? 3 days once a month?

She is saying that after three days of this you should start seeing some improvement. I believe this process can be repeated. You could also do Pedialyte soaks to help with hydration.

How is your little guy holding up?

You should do it in every soak until he starts eating properly again. The nutrients go into his system by way of drinking the soak and thru the cloaca.

Thank you all who've responded. The little one appears to be a bit more motivated. However, I'm still feeling somewhat guarded on long term prognosis and will no doubt repeat the process. Since having carrots on a daily basis isn't good for them, I'm guessing a once a month soaking would be ok? @Yvonne G

Hi again, if your tort is not eating at all you still should give the carrot baby food soak daily, even twice a day, still having food and water available in the enclosure. When he starts eating his regular foods, then you can stop the carrots in the soaks. I haven’t heard of carrot not being good for a sick tort, actually is kind of a lifeline to prevent them going “down”. We’ve seen many torts recovering their appetite/health because of this and as many go down because it’s too late for them ... So really it’s a win-win situation, for yourself as you are doing “everything” you can as for the tort getting nutrients!!! Your tort might not have a month ... one of mine didn’t, the other did ... #beentheredonethat

Thanks for your reply, but mine is eating and pooping regularly. Just not eating as much as I think and no growth to speak of.

If you're worried about too much carrot (or vitamin A) in the carrot-soak, consider daily soaks with a slightly different mix:

I've used the Gerber one, and keep a container in my tortoise first-aid kit.

Good luck with your tort!

Oh well, then is just a matter of waiting, I am in the same predicament with my second sulcata ... hoping for a growth spur or a turn for the worst ...

BTW, you don’t need to use baby food at all if your tort is eating ... Fruit baby food is not good because of the load of sugar in them ...
