Hello!
I’ve been searching info for weeks and often end up on this site so I thought I should finally join
Our tortoise is just a baby and super adorable but the information available is inconsistent and pet stores are horrible; they nearly blinded our poor little guy with coil bulbs that they recommended.
(I noticed he was lethargic and not opening his eyes, burrowing completely under the substrate and just not looking well, I searched possible issues and found out about the bulbs on this site, shut it off immediately and he came around in an hour or two. So scary!)
I honestly just want to learn from all you experts and do the best for this little guy. He was still a little off this morning so we gave him a bath & he perked up but quickly went back under his little bridge hide.
So hard being unsure of everything I do!
The things that have recently changed are the location of his tank (from my small quiet bathroom to the grand room) and that stupid coil bulb needs to be replaced (I just stopped turning it on yesterday and added vitamins to his food for today until we get to the store).
He eats only fresh foods and his favourites seems to be leafy green lettuce, grated carrots and recently he seems to like organic kale.
He always has fresh water and we change it every morning. I mist the tank when it seems dry during the day (if it gets lower than 30).
We live in northern Canada, Alberta.
Our tank is between 80-90 during the days and only goes down to 70 at night.
Humidity sits between 30-40 during the days, unless I mist. But when the temp drops at night it usually goes up to 60.
He’s so tiny, we just have him in a starter set up and plan to move him into something larger, in the next few months. We’re looking at building him a tortoise table any recommendations or suggestions appreciated! Is it true that he can get stressed out being able to see thru his glass enclosure? Should I put some tape around the bottom edges to make him feel more secure?
Thanks for all the forums, posts and conversations. They’ve been so helpful these first few weeks!
