My boyfriend got me a hatchling cherry head for Christmas from backwater reptiles. Is she a cherry head or a red foot...?

You have a nicely colored northern type red-footed tortoise there. A young cherryhead possesses a dark plastron with heavy dark brown pigment along the scute borders. Also, cherryheads have fewer but larger colored front leg scales and a different scute formula on their heads.
The so called ‘cherryhead’ is a red-footed tortoise too but from a different locality in South America...notably SE Brazil. Many keepers are getting away from using the moniker cherryhead and using Brazilian red-foot tortoise instead for the US pet trade. Cherryhead is misleading and leads to confusion.
But then again, using the term Brazilian is also misleading as there are at least four distinct regional variants (or actually un-described subspecies) that occur in the vast country of Brazil. But since it is only the cherryhead form that has reached this country via the pet trade, it works.

Well that sucks got the wrong type of tortoise sent to me! I've been reading up on backwater reptiles and haven't heard anything good. Wish my boyfriend would've done more research before buying from them!

Carl is right - Cherryhead was a marketing ploy that was started when the "Brazilian" redfoot tortoises were first imported some 20+ years ago!

The 'dark / marbling' is virtually "right-out-of-the-egg" -

ALL LIES !!!I
It is true about the bulbous nose and Brazilians do come in varied colors - as do the other locales - [ only exception is the Colombian locale.. all yellow ] There are always exceptions and extremes.

You have a nice Northern.

You can probably tell which one of these juveniles is the Brazilian...

You’ll notice this northern has the 2 large leg scales that most associate to be an identification of a Brazilian. Another load of codswallop that Terry learnt me.

Larger / fewer leg scales... and 'elbow-spurs' ???????? ( raised from a hatchling )

She's absolutely gorgeous regardless of the seller's "confusion". I do hope you've fallen for her, if not, let me know, happy to add her to my little tribe!
BTW - some sellers would charge extra for one that looks like her because of the "high-color" so if it makes you feel better, you still got something pretty special.

I would love to know what happened, and if you still have this sweet little "mistake".

The animal could /would have a slightly higher value and price because of the striking color saturation.
But selling one as something it is not is just wrong.
It will almost certainly become a very attractive adult. At any rate.
