Are there any Radiated tortoise breeders in Washington or Utah State?

I am likely going to be moving to Washington State from Utah, and would like to get my foot in the door so that I can get a head start on a colony without waiting on a permit which will likely never go through. Does anyone know of anyone who does, or can direct me to someone who could look up the studbook records so that I can get in touch with someone who may not be on here?

Thanks,

Cory

I am also from Washington. I don't find any tortoise breeder in this state. Maybe the state is in the north and not that warm in most of year which means a relative high cost to breed tortoise in this state.

There is an organization in Seattle called Northwest Tortoise. Their mission is to rescue the abandoned tortoise. They also do some captive breeder but only for redfoot, greek and box turtle. They also provide their rescued tortoise for adoption, but they only have box turtle, Russian, redfoot and Sulcata now.

In Petco and Petsmart, you can buy Russian tortoise, and sometimes Greek or Herman, but no radiated.

There is a pet store called Amazon Fish & Pet in north Seattle. They have one young adult Leopard and three young adult Sulcata, but no Radiated either.

That's all I know where you can buy tortoise locally in Washington. I also want to buy a radiated tortoise. I don't want to apply the CWB permit since it requires a fee and I know the approve rate is very low.

So please let me know if you find an radiated tortoise breeder in Washington state too.

For sure AriesXiao, I followed you. Follow me and we will stay in touch. I have star tortoises and just got some eggs, but they are not fertile. I think I am going to hold off on the permit as well until my tortoises are more established. I am going to tey to get the permit within the next couple of years Hopefully I will still be up there. I think I will move up there by Spring. It is unfortunate there is not more tortoise keepers up there.

Have you found any? I already gave up. I bought one Burmese Star from Tom which I think the outlooking is similar to radiated

Unfortunately I have not. I have not looked at all since then either. I doubt there is anyone who has any either. I think it is going to come down to you and me, unless someone moves there with some. I am going to put in an application for a permit once I get settled down there, just in case they happen to approve it. However, until I get an approval or local buy I am going to stick with improving the quality of my current colonies, Indian and Burmese stars.

There is a long-time owner/breeder of Radiated Tortoises in WA state. His name is Ross Popenoe. Contact me privately for his email.
I last spoke with him a couple of years ago, so I hope he is still there.

Redmond, WA
Thank you Bill Z, I emailed him, so I will let you know how it goes :)

You are welcome. I spoke with Ross today on the phone and he does have some young Radiated Tortoises available. I am sure he will be able to help you acquire some once you get relocated to WA state.

That is excellent news! I am so excited! I really want to focus on the high yellow variety, but honestly anything to get started and get my foot in the door would make me happy. I can't wait to get some hands on experience with this species.

Thank you for all of the information as well @ariesxiao
Just an update. I contacted the Washington breeder and bought one Radiated tortoise from his place. He had three radiated tortoise when I visited him. One is around 4-5 cms and the other two are 7-8 cms. I bought one 7-8 cms one. He said he have the CBP permit and cooperation relationship with some breeders in Arizona and he can help to get more radiated torotise to Washington if anyone is interested in buying.

I've purchased radiata from Ross P 10 years so when I had a CBW permit. I believe I also met him in person! Very nice guy and I highly recommend him
