The one time i bought worms from WartMall they were not viable. Maybe they serve as emergency food but they are probably fed on nutritious calcium-rich BPA-containing newsprint.

Everywhere i go, i open the lid and look at them. i once got a bad batch from Ace hardware, so i make sure i look before i buy. the vet i have used told me to soak them for about 5 minutes and they will poop. That way they are healthier for the turtles. She told me that about the store bought ones, but said wild caught hare healthy to feed as is.

The one time i tried that at Wmart the worms were very cold, too cold to move if they were alive. Probably regular fridge temps, high 30s F.

Sorry you have had bad luck. The worms i got yesterday were healthy and fat. Betty was thrilled.

I still have Betty indoors until spring, and the others are hibernating. Have not been able to find affordable earthworms (Canadian Nightcrawlers) online, But Walmart has them 18 for $2.98. Betty was so happy to get an earthworm!

Why should you soak them? I had no idea. We just give them to my box turtle like that. Same with the meal worms I get from Walmart.

The vet said that the dirt they are packed in is not good for them, can cause impactions. So if you soak the worm in cold-lukewarm water for 5 minutes it should poop and then it is safe to feed to the turtles.
