My timers are set for 6a to 6p. I don't change them for daylight savings time, so parts of the year it's 5a to 5p.

Me too. 6:30am to 6:30pm. I also don't adjust for Daylight Savings Time. Basking lamps are species and age dependent for me.

For me it does depend upon a few things - species, if I am breeding them, and am I going to brumate them or try to keep a brumating species up all year.

For light cycle I do try to mimic summer in their natural range, as that is what they are genetically programmed for circadial and cicannual rhythms. For most turtles and tortoises if they are young and actively growing I definitely prefer a 14 hours photoperiod. For temperate species to avoid brumation also 14 hours. I set my timers to go on at 6AM and off at 8PM

For tropical species I usually go from 6:30am to 7:pm.

For temperate species I adjust it to match the daylight outside depending on the time of year.

Basking lamps are meant to simulate the warming rays of the sun. It should stay on all day and be off at night.

I'll probably start turning it off around 7 since they go in there hide around that time and dont come out. I know if starts to get dark here at like 530
