Hi, I have a 20 month old Tunisian tortoise called Boo, who has a fantastic character and loves listening to people talking!!! How does everyone manage finding food during the winter months? Boo doesn't particularly like dried food - although it's offered alongside green food

I'm fortunate enough to have very mild winter weather where I live. But I've seen that others use more store-bought greens, and Mazuri, when they don't have access to weeds during the winter.

You can resort to the packaged salad mixtures sold at the grocery in the produce department

If you don't have weeds, leaves and flowers in your climate in winter, then favor endive and escarole from the store as staples. Use lots of other for variety, like arugula, cilantro, carrot tops, kale, collard, mustard and turnip greens, bok choy, etc...

One problem with all of these foods is that they lack fiber. Try to amend them by mixing in prepared foods like ZooMed Grassland, Mazuri, or your Komodo and Pre-Alpin food over there. You can also mix in blended grass hay, or freshly sprouted grass. Although greeks aren't really grass eaters, the grass will add fiber to your other winter foods.

I use store bought foods mustard greens, collard greens, radicchio, spring mix if it don't have a lot of spinich. I pick the weeds like dandelions and plantain in the summer and dehydrate them to use in the winter with the store bought greens. To help with the fiber I take timothy hay, grind it in a blender and sprinkle that on the food when her poop is loose. I spray her food with water mist to moisten the dehydrated stuff and help it stick to the greens. My russian isn't to keen on dry food.

My Russian Tortoise, Chitty-Pahk-CHa, does not eat the pelleted food. I have not seen him touch it, loves Cauliflower, salad greens, carrots, broccoli and some kale, but will not touch the pelleted food, I moisten it for him and it is a no go. Any suggestions anyone?

You might try to moisten it, smoosh it into a paste, and cover the foods he does like with it ... over time this should accustom him to the food.

My tortoise is over 60 years old and I inherited from my brother.
I live in Buckinghamshire and tortoise woke from hibernation a week ago, immediately, I offered thin slices of cucumber. The skin has fibre but more importantly, cucumber is mostly liquid.
Plantains (not the vegetable) are tough weeds and are green throughout the winter. They are very fibrous. I pick the small centre leaves and cut them up with scissors.
My tort loves lettuce too.
He also loves dandelions. None in my garden yet, but I look out for them on sunny verges when I am driving along. Until inheriting tortoise, I did not realise they flowered so early. I am not an expert and neither was my brother but tortoise is a healthy specimen, so the vets tell me. Hope this helps.
