Well, looks like Sherman is now an odd name. Thanks for the confirmation!
Names for animals are no big deal. ONe of our members has a male leopard named Lola and I have a female cat called Spencer.

Definitely a girl, Also count the front feets toes. Back of shell seems taller than my older female Spekes and would not be surprised if this is a Western or Eastern Bells:<3:.

5 on front and I think 4 on back. She's missing all of her rear toenails right now. Seeing the vet today.

OK so not a western Bells for sure. Mine break off their nails too and didn't even slow them down. But they will grow back. If you use a soft substrate they will grow back sooner and likely last longer. Your tortoises front nails do need trimmed. Just don't cut back into the part that will hurt and bleed. Unless you actually see an infection(back feet)not a worry. I'd really like to see a Bells keeper chime in and judge what yours is for sure.

The vet trimmed her nails and beak and said she has an upper respiratory infection. He said once she feels better she'll start eating again. Other than that he said she looked good and was the sweetest tortoise ever. He fell in love with her just like I did.

She has coconut fiber in her box (tortoise table?) but she spends a good portion of the day just running around the house. She's been getting a nice long soak every day too. I think her nails may have fallen off because she was in a very dry environment prior to being with me. It was also very cold and she didn't have the best diet. Hopefully she'll be feeling better soon. I have to take her back on Wednesday for another shot and checkup.

Thank you all for the great info!

Well, I consider an "adoption" a rescue. Just as my dog that came from the animal shelter was actually "adopted," I rescued him. If an animal doesn't have a forever loving home where they are provided adequate care they need to be rescued.

I didn't post his medical issues as I'm leaving that for the vet. I was just looking for validation on species.

Your response was not a warm welcome and I will bring my questions elsewhere going forward.
I've actually paid good money to rescue Tortoises.
