Hello I'm Paul I recently joined the forum and thx to a few members I know now I got a sulcata

Someone mentioned "pyramiding" and I looked into the word and what it has to do with tortoises

So I read here that the raised scutes are pyramiding and that it is caused by growth in to dry conditions and it seems like pyramiding is a big deal in the tortoise world

But I cant find an answer if it is dangerous?
Does my tort feels pain on its shell?
Is my tortoise suffering ?
Would it be better to put her to sleep?

Can it still live normal?

If all else is good, hydration, diet, temperatures, UV, etc..., then pyramiding is only cosmetic.

We are concerned about it because it doesn't typically happen in the wild for most species the way it does in captivity. This indicates that there is a problem with our husbandry, and some of us tortoise keepers have been working for years to figure it out.

It's irritating to me when people tell new keepers that their tortoise is pyramiding when the tortoise looks like yours does. The "pyramiding" on your tortoise is so very mild as to almost be non existent. This is what I consider pyramiding:

There are varying degrees of pyramiding. Your tortoise looks great. Don't worry about it.

Yvonne is right. As usual. Your sulcata is better than 90% of the ones out there as far as pyramiding goes. Nothing to worry about.
