I’m holly and my tortoise is called T!

T is a horse field tortoise or Russian tortoise. He is my first and he is 5 this year!

We’re from the uk, East Yorkshire to be a little more specific:)

T is most active when there is light and sound present and I love watching him/her walk around and climb and T currently looks like a pirate (seems to be on the mend, hopefully with advice he will be better and happier than ever in no time)

Welcome Holly and T.
What is wrong with T? Can we see pics of your friend?

It’s the beak that I’m concerned with really the vet didn’t say it was a problem as T has no troubles eating. Also one of his eyes has been closed for about a year and he has medication for it so hopefully it will open but the er said it may have scarred over but not to worry as long as he’s active and eating.

Great pics thanks. T looks dry but I am no expert on Russians. What kind of enclosure do you have for T?
Great looking grass!

I made it, it’s an open top enclosure and I use a mix of sand and soil for the substrate.

Also I bath T once a week but I’m never sure how long to leave him for as he tends to try climbing up the side of the tub and I always get scared if the waters too warm

A infrared temp gun is good for taking the water temp or a digital thermometer with external wire probes. Also maybe soak more than once a week.
I have read here where sand is not a good substrate because it can cause impaction. Maybe someone can add to these concerns.

Being older I would think 1 or twice a week for 1/2 hr or more. Also it depends if you have a water dish that T can soak in the enclosure.
But if you can soak more than 1 or 2 times a week I don't think it would hurt.

So not sure if anyone will see this but just a little update T’s pirate eye opened tonight during his soak I couldn’t be happier!

I’m sure this was not because of the medication as I refrained from using it due to its use by date but due to proper care advised by the forum so thank you all from the bottom of my heart ! [emoji173]️
