Hey everyone, What do you guys do with your little buddies when you go on vacation? Do you ever take him or her with you or can you board them with vet like you can with dogs? I haven't gotten my buddy yet but this is just one of many questions I need answered.

thankfully, my daughter lives only a half mile or so away from me, so she comes in and tends the critters if I'm ever away for more than a day.

I don't have any relatives close by that I can trust to do that, unfortunately. The person that is probably willing to do it has a dog and she will likely get offended if I ask her to come by and not bring the dog.

Maybe your friend with the dog could take the tortoise into their home for care? If not, hire someone if it's an outside tortoise...if it's an inside tortoise hire someone to care for it in their home. Care.com has folks advertising for petsitting jobs. So does Craigslist. Care should be taken when hiring off Craigslist of course. See the home first to check out the spot its tank'll be set up. I hired off Craigslist for petsitting in my home. My daughter was usually home when the sitter was there though and the girl gave off good "vibes".

For periods up to a week, I let Darwin manage in his own, making sure to feed and soak him extra before and after my absence.

So long as the temperature and humidity are within optimal parameters inside the enclosure, your tort should be fine for up to a week.

Charlie takes care of himself. There are plenty of weeds growing for him. I leave the outside door of his nightbox open so he can get in and out. It doesn't keep him as warm that way, but he is fine as long as we aren't having a really cold spell. When I get home, the nightbox is loaded with poop but he doesn't seem to mind.

When he was little and still in an enclosure, we boarded him at the same place we took our dog and cat. We gave them greens to give him and they had to fill up his water. The lights were on a timer. They didn't soak him. It would be better to get someone who knew how to take care of a tortoise, but for just a few days, it won't cause any damage.

My tortoise does not usually have greens growing directly in his tank due to limited space. But before leaving for a few days, I bought a container of "cat grass" (wheat grass) from PetsMart, set it in his tank on its side so he can reach it (he's still quite small), and asked the person who is watering my plants during my trip to also add water to his water bowl. That has worked well for several short (5 days or less) trips so far.

I work for Rover and I have a few clients that have torts as well as furry and feathery pets I sit for. I have even obtained some Red-Foot eggs and worked a trade for those that hatched with free sitting. I also have one client that has a Sulcata like my Tank. There could be others that do pet-sitting that have experience with torts, you just have to ask around.
