Hi everyone,

I’m new to Box Turtle care. I have had a Russian Tortoise before but unfortunately it passes recently as it was bought from Petco and just couldn’t cope with captivity. I suspect it was wild caught (which is obviously what Petco and Petsmart are known for) However, after doing lengthy research I decided to purchase a 6 mo old well started Easter Box Turtle baby from Tortoise Town. I have already begun building his habitat. I am using a 50 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank which is about 4 to 4 1/2 ft long, 2 to 2 1/2 ft wide, and 1 ft high. I purchased some Lugarti Natural Reptile Bedding which is a peat moss mixture and excellent for burrowing. I used it previously for my Russian Tortoise and he did really we on it and it was amazingly less dusty and easier to clean. I have a couple of hides for him and a good basking spot (a fake wood stump) I am using my Mega Ray MVB to provide warmth and UV light as well as small dish for him to drink/soak in if he so chooses. I haven’t added the spag moss yet as he hasn’t arrived yet due to the breeder making sure he is physically fit for travel. I completely understand that keeping it moist and listing a couple times a day is necessary to avoid any eye issues or dryness. I also bought a grow light to light the other end without any heat if I decide to grow some grass in the enclosure. I am also contemplating adding a small plant to provide a little shade. Thankfully after researching I understand the diet pretty well as far as worms, snails, crickets etc as protein and a mild to moderate amount of vegetation. I also bought a couple of cans of Zoo Med Box Turtle diet and a container of Repashy Savory Stew Gel Mix to feed in rotation.

Anyway I don’t want to babble much more but I wanted to introduce myself and get more familiar with this species. I figured it can’t be that hard seeming I have owned a tortoise before, just a few tweaks here and there.

Nice too meet everyone!
I am super excited to learn and raise my son!

Good luck. I am sure the others can be more help as to indoor care, i keep mine outside.

Yeah it’s cold out here in Maryland and we live in a large apartment. I could always keep him on the patio if I choose to but luckily he’s captive bred so he should thrive indoors. Thanks for the diet sheet that should help me determine some stuff to feed. I figured earthworms l, meal worms, etc for now. I bought a gel mix from Repashy for turtles called Savory Stew so it has protein sources like fish, krill, squid, and black fly larvae while also having some vegetation powder in it. I’m really looking forward to this new experience

mine are outside hibernating. they will wake up in a month.

That’s awesome! What kind do you have? I considered getting a Three Toed as they were a tad bit cheaper but I like the overall coloring of Easterns. It seems they are so popular most breeders online had none, Tortoise Town was the only one I could find with Easterns. A few places had 3 Toed’s which would have been fine with me ‍♂️

That’s actually really awesome. I was thinking of finding a few live plants to put in my stock tank. I do have terrarium grass I can grow as well. I saw some live plants on LLLReptile but I am not sure what to get. I was thinking maybe a couple of ferns? I also bought some “Leaf” substrate from Lugarti to add with the spag moss so the little guy can hide amongst the leaves if he wishes. I do also have cypress mulch left over from my Russian Tortoise who passed away recently but I figured the peat moss mixture substrate I have paired with the moss and leaves would be just fine..if you think?

i am not sure what plants do well indoors. Ferns are good, boxies like to hide under plants, they don't like too much open space. Maybe someone on here can advise you to some safe indoor plants.

Pothos and spider plants do well in indoor enclosures. They are hardy indoor lower light plants. With a box turtle it's best to keep them in pots or they end up getting dug out of the substrate.

Thanks, that’s a big help.

Hi Chris:

Your new little box turtle will feel pretty exposed in that open tank. Try to get several nice plants in there. You can leave them in their pots and just sink the pot down into the substrate. Also, it looks like your light may be up too high. Buy yourself a laser temperature gun and check the temperature all over the whole enclosure on the ground. A baby box turtle needs it to be around 80-85F degrees all over the whole enclosure. And he needs it to be pretty moist and humid. You may need to invest in a CHE:

. . . and leave it turned on all the time.

Please keep in mind that was the tank before any plants, moss is going to be added. I already know that I need to add plants and have since I first decided to get a box turtle. I have a side of the tank covered so it stays moist on one end and the humidity stays around 60-80% so it should be fine. If for some reason I notice the moisture leaves much quicker or it doesn’t stay moist I’ll invest in adding something to keep it moist and humidity appropriate. Thanks for your input though
