I am looking for opinions on the sex of two roughly 3.5 inch Red cheek mud turtles. I can obviously tell the difference when they are full grown but I’m having a hard time telling, but I think they might be both males. Then I start seeing a lot of differences in the shell shape though, and turtle #1 looks more convex to me and more domed carapace. while the other one looks the opposite. But they both have pretty large tails compared to shell size with tiny clear/white tips. What do you think?

Turtle #1 - Ignis

Nice red-cheeks.
Ignis is a female .
Buddy looks to be a young male.
Females tend to have plain orange or yellow plastrons....while male typically have dark markings on theirs.
Buddy's tail should grow much bigger this year. Happens fast, you'll see

As a caveat, I will stress that Buddy LOOKS like a young male. But it ain’t a guarantee

Wait it out a little longer and I’ll know for sure.. IMG_1015.jpg

A better photo of ignis’ tail.

In a perfect world one of them, at least, would be a female. [emoji38]

I'm no expert, but they both look female to me.
i agree looks female from the plastrome. males tend to have indented bellys so they can mount females for breeding. females have flat or rounded out so they have room for eggs.
