I got a tortoise from my dad and sister as a gift, well when they got him from the pet store, they neglected to ask what species he was, when I went back they told me he was probably a Russian tortoise but I honestly think he looks different than any other Russian tortoises that I’ve seen, I was just wandering if maybe anyone might know what he could be or how I can find out, as I want to make sure he gets the proper care and nutritionimage.jpg

I was thinking he was either Greek or Herman’s as well, but if you believe he is a Greek then I’ll learn everything I can about them so I can give him everything he needs, I think he’s a little sick because he hasn’t really been eating a whole lot and he doesn’t seem to be able to open his eyes without me running him under the water. I’m thinking a trip to the vet will be in his best interest, but I need to find one first

Welcome and good luck. Give him some warm soaks for 1/2 hr. Dont let the water cool down. He might be dehydrated.

My new care guide for Greek tortoises should be posted at the top of this forum today which you’ll be able to use. It’s very in-depth.

Welcome to the forum. Please post some pictures of his enclosure. Are you using coiled bulbs? If so, it is possible they are hurting your torts eyes. Pictures will help us to help you give him all the right stuff he needs. Thanks

I've got a Hermans and a Greek and yours looks like the Greek. The Hermans looks similar, but his face is different as he has a sort of beak. He was having trouble eating when I got him so the vet trimmed his beak.

I don’t currently have a whole lot for his set up, it’s a glass tank with a zoo med light bar, I have a little hut for him to get away from the light and also a water and food bowl in it as well, but he spends most of his time roaming the house because I know his enclosure isn’t set up properly for him, so I am currently doing all the research I can to get him into the best environment, and build a better enclosure for him

Yes get your tort in a bigger enclosure as soon as possible. Roaming the house is really not ideal. Eating foreign matter on the floor plus once they think the house is their living area. They feel constrained no matter how big you make the enclosure.

Not a Russian, we have a Russian Tortoise, and he looks nothing like your guy. I hope you can identify the species, & give him the care and love he needs! Good luck!

@FaithB - Chris has updated his Greek care sheet for us. You can find it pinned close to the top of our Greek section. It's worth taking a look at.
