They can only legally be found in their home state, and cannot be bought or sold. It is also illegal to breed or artificially hatch the eggs. It is illegal to move one across state lines.

Ok gotcha. I’ve read that in Arizona, they have adoptions for captive breed tortoises.

Yes, you can legally adopt them in their home state (rescued, injured or otherwise ending up in private hands), but you have to keep them in that state and no money can change hands.

I agree with Yvonne, and I would add that I don't think they would do well in your state even if it was legal. In my experience, this species doesn't do well with high humidity. Some people here in CA try to keep them near the coast and it doesn't work well most of the time. They get better when they are moved inland to drier areas away from the cold clammy temps on the coast.
