I have noticed my sully often does this, she comes to her food, then for no reason, she HAVE to go back and make a quick U-turn for no reason and comeback to the dish, she can do that many times before finishing instead of just standing there and eat, then Iv’e noticed others older sully do the same! So what is the reason for that behavior, testing to see if something try to chase them? Can’t eat too long at the same place because they are programmed to eat while always moving??

I’ve notice my 2yo doing this. Drives me nuts bc if it is Mazuri day, she eats, walks across it so she has Mazuri all over her feet, then turns around and comes back immediately for more. Definitely not a cool spot. It’s in the 80s all day.

Thank you all for your responses, there seems to be many things that could explain this...It is a behavior that I keep seeing with sulcata’s, with your experiences and mine. It’s weird and funny, maybe we’ll never know exactly why...but I sure think of all the explanations above, one must be right, or all of them! : )

I’m replying to my own question, about Emi having her eyes closed and not eating. Apparently it is a Vitamin A deficiency. I have researched, and its to easy to overdose tortoises with Vitamin A. I was prompted to get Beta Carotin, they are able to transform the Beta Carotin to Vitamin A. Hoping this helps, I think when she quit eating her “tortoise chow”, it caused her to lose her Vit A
