Poor Misty (very large doberman and faithful companion) has Springtime allergies. I use Advantix on her, so I know it's not fleas. Every Spring she sneezes when we go outside (over and over), and she's very itchy. I give her two Benadryl daily but I don't really know as it's doing much good. Now this a.m. there's a new problem. During the night she has licked the back of one front ankle so much that she has licked off the top layer of skin. I can make her stop licking when I'm aware of it, however, I can't do anything about it when I'm asleep.

Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do to protect this front leg until the skin grows back? She'll rip a bandage right off. I live in a very small house and she's a very big dog. I don't think an elizabethan collar would fit in my house.

Elizabethton? Is that the cone that goes around their neck?

Thank you. I'm willing to try anything.

Yeah, David. . . that's the cone of shame that goes around the dog's neck.

Oh poor Misty!!! What’s up with those allergies?! When I was growing up in Poland I never knew such thing had existed outside of rare reactions to stuff. I used to roll my eyes when people around me would talk about allergies, thinking they were “spoiled rotten, whiny hypochondriacs”! Then, after about 5-6 yrs of living in Central Texas I too, have to deal with those. Benadryl alone may not be enough for the big pup like Misty. I’d try that at bedtime and another antihistamine at daytime to keep steady flow of it in her system. I don’t know what a half-life of Benadryl is in dog (can look it up tho) and how long it will last but the golden standard in humans is benadryl at nite and something else at daytime. Also, how about CBD oil? Part of the allergy problem is the “excitability”, that is one of the reasons we often give things like Hydroxizine, or even Ativan (same as Lorazepam, it’s a benzodiazepine), that along with antypiretics (Tylenol) to CALM things down, to reduce the body’s response to whatever allergen it is trying to deal with. My Friend has 2 very big dogs and she recently started giving them the CBD. One if her pups is Anatolian Shepard mix (108lbs! he is a horse![emoji38]) and another is a Husky about 50 or 60 lbs. They are both rescue dogs with different issues. The „horsie” came to her with horrible skin issues, he was half bald with red/purple skin, looked really (I hate to say it) hideous! He was only 5-6 months old (but already very large) was homeless, just running the streets, eating out of garbage... very sad! At the shelter they had considered him „unadoptable” but my friend is very much like myself such a sucker for „the sick and suffering” she could not resist him. Took him home and called him Blossom[emoji38] After 100’s in vet bills, cultures, skin biopsies they found 5or 6 different pathogens infecting his skin. They treated him wih antibiotics, antifungals, antihistamines and such but there was no promise that he would ever look like a normal dog and grow back his coat on his chest, belly and sides. I started cooking for him, and we got all kinds of stuff for him like goat milk with vitamins, trace elements, probiotics, omega 3, all that stuff formulated especially for large breed dogs, and today Blossom is 3 yrs old and absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Still has skin allergies (Austin Tx is known as the allergy capital of the World) but recently with the Benadryl at night and his vitamins and CBD during a day he has been ok, calmer, not scratching. I think it’s worth trying the CBD for poor Misty so that she leaves the dressing alone to let the raw area heal. And maybe I’d try something like a „liquid bandage” or „manouka honey” for that wound to keep germs from getting in. Good luck with that, Yvonne, healing thoughts for sweet Misty[emoji173]️

One more thing: it maybe helpful to try little extra Calcium, Vit C and Zinc supplement. They also help the body deal with allergies and promote healing

Thanks for the suggestions. I forgot all about the liquid bandage. I wonder if she can lick that off. Well I'll buy some tomorrow when I go shopping. I'm not sure if I'll try the CBD or not. Amazon sells Hemp oil for about $25. I'll think about it.

I'm going to throw this out there. My dog has had a persistent rash for many years now thats usually worse in the summer. His skin gets raw and peels and he goes nuts licking and scratching. I've had him at the vet countless times and all they do is give him steroids and antibiotics. It goes away while taking them but comes back a few days after discontinuing them. He's been on and off the meds many times and same cycle for years. About 3 weeks ago out of curiosity I started giving him 30mgs of CBD oil once a day. Literally within 24hrs the rash had completely gone away and hasn't returned since. This is the longest I've seen it not come back. Maybe this might be an option for you too?

The stuff sold on Amazon is snake oil. Amazon prohibits the sale of CBD. The hemp oil being sold there is harvested from seeds not plants and while it does contain Trace amounts of CBD it's an insignificant amount. I get it from a company in Oregon called Lazurus. They even have a formula specially formulated for dogs.

To help with allergies she needs something to work from the inside and outside(tablets and creams). Put a piece of cloth(dish towel material) on after it's been dipped in lemon juice and dryed in the sun. Do u have any flowers in ur garden that have a lot of pollen?

Thanks for the info. I've ordered a small bottle of the stuff from Lazarus. Her foot is all healed, but she's still totally itchy all over her body. So, we'll see if it works.

I'm pretty sure it's grass. She starts sneezing and "starting her Honda" as soon as we step out the back door, and all there is in the backyard is sparse grassy dirt.

Good luck, hopefully it gives her some relief. I'm amazed how quickly it seemed to help my dog.

Whats Honda? My Afrikaans brain read it has Honde which is dog in Afrikaans lol

Normally dog skin allergies are caused by the pollen in the air floating around and getting caught in the fur, sometimes the pollen is not visible on the fur tho

"Honda" is a car. It's a saying, like the dog sneezing sounds like an old car starting.

LOL!! No, what I mean is she stands there on three legs while trying to scratch her stomach with a back leg, but only succeeds in scratching air - but it looks like she's trying to push the kick starter of her motorcycle.

Please don`t use tree tea oil with dogs or cats anyway. It is toxic !!!!!

I just bought this one for my old dog. She has a big cancer tumor and she tries to lick on it.
