Getting things set up to get a sulcata in the next year or so. I've been doing some online research and kept ending up here so I thought I would sign up.

I know living in Ohio it isn't an easy state to have a sulcata but I've been working to convert my walk out basment to be an indoor retreat for the winter and bad weather.

I also want to know what pellet people use along with yard grass, hay, and veggies. What makes the best treats?

Also I think I would rather find a good breeder to buy direct from. There is a mom and pop shop not far that sells some baby's but the more I read about there care the more I think they might not be the best place to get a baby. So any input here would be helpful.

Anyways my names Amanda so if you have any suggestions let me know :)

Greetings!!
Mazuri is a fav. around here smaller amounts can be bought off eBay. Keeping a tort in your area is more diffucult, but def. doable.

Welcome Amanda, when buying mazuri. Dont buy the LS( low starch). I think the type I bought was 5M21. The members here say torts like the regular to the LS.

Thanks for the welcomes and suggestions :)

Another question, I've seen people keep them by themselves and others with a buddy. From what I can tell they aren't really social but than I read that others like to have a buddy and are bonded. So should I just get one sulacata or two?

Welcome! Unless you want to set up two separate habitats, get one. They are very territorial . I have read lots of stories where people were successful keeping two together for sometimes years and then out of the blue having to get rid of one. It’s sad for the owner and the tortoise. You are smart to to look at well established breeders. There are also lots of rescue centers that are over crowded if your interested in starting with one that’s a little bigger
Either way, good luck! We will look forward to meeting your new addition!.

You won't regret a sulcata. I only have one also. I don't know much about other breeds but sulcata's are real characters. He or she will bring you many good moments.

I've been reading about a few kinds but loved everything about sulcatas. Was worried my husband wouldn't approve at first when I told him they can get 200 pounds but he smiled and said that's the one. :)
I did message Lance and Friday I'm putting down a deposit on a hatchling :)

Congrats!
