When I first moved back to KY in 2016, I had a very primitive indoors set-up for my pair of rapidly growing redfoots. I spent that first winter and the subsequent spring and summer building a huge insulated box in my garage for them. Had to take a break after that for other house projects, but I would get them outside in the warmer months in a piece of my yard surrounded by chicken wire and landscape blocks.

I had 3 escape attempts from the smaller one (found her nearby in the yard or the neighbor's driveway all times--she is excellent at exploiting weaknesses in the perimeter!) and a days-long excursion from the big one (on a whim after a few days I asked a neighbor 3 houses down if he'd seen anything that looks like a "giant box turtle". He said she'd been camping in his flower beds, so I got lucky there.) I finally got the pen so that they wouldn't be able to escape, but it was by no means predator-proof, so I'd have to take them in every night or risk the raccoons, foxes, and coyotes that frequent the neighborhood.

So over this winter I decided (with the wife begrudgingly blessing the operation) to tear down the outside enclosure and build a new one. I decided to keep it in the backyard on the north side of the house because it's sort of level there, close to the hose faucet and a nice view from the kitchen. It also gets sun in the late morning and late afternoon and some spotty sun in between due to tree coverage.

Due to tree and deck placement, I settled on a base size of 17x9 feet.

Leveled it up with concrete block on a base of crushed stone. The blocks are held in place with rebar and capped with landscape stone that are glued on.IMG_20190223_101411.jpg
Had my little helper with me on a cold January morning. Had to use some of the blocks to hold back all of the dirt and clay on the gentle slope while I built the wall. Needed to remove some tree roots as well.

IMG_20190503_150623_01.jpgA guy on Craigslist gave me this lightly used vinyl-coated chain link fence fabric for free, and after asking around, decided this was safe enough to use with the torts. Also, using chain link materials, I would be able to create a custom-sized enclosure a little easier.

IMG_20190530_190409.jpg IMG_20190530_190718.jpg Started framing out the top side, started with a 4x4ft gap in 2 corners for access hatches. Also back-filled the enclosure with top soil to nearly level, and started some planting. So far I've got plantain weeds, dandelions, grape, hardy hibiscus (Rose of Sharon) and spider plants. Also built a 3x3 hide box that I can put potted plants on top of.

I had to lay under it to do many of the ties and adjustments of the rails. I added some cypress mulch-soil mix in. For the first time since i moved out of Florida, they are sleeping outside at night. They seem to be enjoying it.

I'm open to suggestions for improvement. I assume someone will mention the view they have out of the pen, but it hasn't affected them either in this one or the last iteration.

What a nice job!

I have a feeling you're going to be sorry you didn't make it tall enough for a human to walk inside, though. When I built my chicken coop it wasn't tall enough for me to stand up inside it, and I had to stoop over a bit in order to fit in there. And believe me, there were plenty of times when I needed to go all the way inside.

You seem to have picked a very good spot. Looks like trees will provide shade. RF"s like diffused sunlight as opposed to being sun worshippers like some other species.

Trust me I'm already regretting it, especially when I had to attach the top roof lol. And on the occasion that I do need to take them out, the hide box is almost too deep for me to reach them at the back. But I manage. I can crawl thru the entire cage if I need to. Worst case scenario for the next few years, I can send the kids in after them

Looks like a very well designed and constructed enclosure. Alas, it makes me sad when I go look at mine...

Trust me my first one was pretty sad lol. I imagine the climate in TX gives you a lot of options though.

Awesome! I know they love their enclosure. They are very lucky to have you care for them and wow! So much work went into this fabulous home I hope I can build something like this for my 1 1/2 year old redfoot tort as soon as she gets bigger.
