Had some very bad news from my vet.
I posted a week ago that my tortoise has become lethargic and hadn’t been eating and also his eyes had shut and become swollen.

Got blood test results back today that is showing kidney failure. The uric acid result was so high that they couldn’t even give me a figure as it was off the scale. Red and white blood cells both very low. Vet said we could insert feeding tube to rehydrate him but she said the prognosis was very poor as damage is irreparable.

I’m very upset, but I suspect some damage had been done before I got him. When I brought him home from the pet store the guy told me he was very dry. I battled gritty urates for weeks and he has had them on and off since I got him. I’ve done everything by this forum and he was bathed daily so I’m hoping that it was nothing that I done.
I’m going to miss my little guy.

Thanks all. I have to take him tomorrow. I feel so bad on him but I know he isn’t going to get better from this.

I think the thing that upsets me the most is that I see lots of tortoises being kept in terrible conditions, on dry rabbit pellet substrate, eating iceberg and tomato’s but yet seem to be ok. I literally stuck to the rules and my little guy didn’t make it.

You will never know how long these tortoises kept in terrible conditiions make it. Some of these poor creatures live longer, others not.
Again: It was not your fault. Please don`t punish yourself.

How very upsetting, who would believe how attached we become to our little shelled warriors. Well done for seeking help and stopping his suffering . Gill

Oh no - I'm so sorry. My vet told me 4 years ago that I would need to let Chuck Norris the Tortoise go, but I refused. I took him down to Texas A&M vet school (which my vet very much supported). It took a lot of time and $$, but we amputated her leg and saved her. However, that was a very different scenario than yours. My point was just to say that I know how tough it is to be faced with that. It's not fair.

Hi Katie, so sorry to hear about your poor tortoise. I would love to know what they fed him before you got him. As it is just keep him on romaine lettuce & cabbage. Mine thrive on this. Best of luck hope he can be revived.

I'm very sorry to hear this! This whole week I've been thinking about your tortoise hoping he would pull through. It is not your fault at all. Who knows how long your tortoise had been kept in a dry place without access to water. It could have been months. Uric acid takes time to build up to fatal quantities, in the pet trade this is usually as a result of little access to drinking water for an extended period of time.

I'm praying for you and your little one, and just know, none of it is your doing!

Michael thank you for taking time to help me out. We all grew to love the little guy but in the end there was no real chance of recovery.
My vet mentioned about dehydration but I’m not sure how as I often saw him drink and he was soaked daily.

It’s not going to put me off, but next time I am going to rescue an adult. There are soooo many looking for homes in he UK. I’m going to spend the rest of this year modifying my outdoor enclosure and making an outdoor box, I hope to rescue maybe an adult Greek or a group of Hermann.

I agree it is not fair when we see the poor conditions others survive. So sorry for you.
