Hello, my girlfriend and I are fairly new to the game and are currently on the search to adopt an Egyptian tortoise from a reputable breeder.

We currently live in central Alberta, Canada and are hoping to find someone who breeds or can acquire a hatchling in this country but will always accept an out of country hatchling as long as it is through legal channels. I understand shipping hatchlings is risky, especially with a species as delicate as this one. I am no stranger to long road trips and willing to make a short term investment drive for the life time reward!

Can anyone point me in the right direction to acquiring this unit species!

Kindest Regards,
Ryan

I have had others ask about an Egyptian breeder in Canada, but have never heard of one. (Maybe you are destined to be the first!) I acquired both of my Egyptians from Chris Leone at Garden State Tortoise. You will find many reviews of him in the vendor section of this forum (good reviews). You might message him through his website, Hermanni Haven", and ask about international shipping. Both of mine were shipped from New Jersey to Texas with no adverse impact.

I don't know of any breeders in the United States that would ship Egyptians outside the continental U.S. As you know and already stated, that's a very delicate species, and within the U.S. they are shipped overnight priority. Shipping to Canada would require extra stops and longer time to go through Customs, which puts a tortoise that size at risk.

If you drive into the U.S. to get one, I'm sure Canada would still require paperwork to bring it home, but it's certainly an option. The only breeders I personally know of who work with this species, and that I would recommend, are Garden State Tortoise in New Jersey, Tortstork in Delaware, and Arizona Tortoise Compound in Arizona.

Thanks for the help! I've been digging deeper into the legal side of acquiring these guys and it looks like I need a canadian CITES import permit and an American CITES export permit. I guess I'll have to ask the breeders if they are able to provide an export permit from CITES.

Good Morning.
Did you find any Egytian tortoises or get anywhere with the "Canadian CITES import permit and an American CITES export permit or asking the breeders if they are able to provide an export permit from CITES."
I am also looking to purchase. Your help or information would be great appreciated fellow Canadian in Ontario. Regards
