Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and I joined because I need some help. My Russian tortoise, Clyde, hasn't been eating much lately and I'm not sure why. He spends most of his time sleeping. Also, I'd like to change his substrate to an organic soil so if anyone knows a good, relatively cheap, brand and where to find it, I would greatly appreciate the help. Any advice would be well appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome
Post a pic of the enclosure, the temps, and diet and anything else that is a part of his care.
An adult Russian needs a minimum of a 4x8 foot enclosure. In the wild they cover a big area for their small size. In warm weather he should have an outdoor enclosure. Thos time of year they should be active.

We keep him in one of those Zoomed tortoise houses, although I’d like to get him a bigger enclosure sometime but we just don’t have a lot of room and I don’t have any money, but I want to get a job soon so hopefully that part will change. The warm side of the enclosure is about 90 degrees and the cool side is about 78 degrees. We feed him greens we get from the grocery store, mostly kale, different types of lettuces like romaine and green leaf, as well as collards and endive and stuff. We try to buy different greens each week to change his diet up. He’s a picky eater too, he doesn’t eat all the stuff we buy for him.

Hi, Juliana,and welcoe!

Those Zoo Med enclosures aren't big enough for a full grown Russian tortoise. You might be able to get away with putting two together, end to end, but it would be even better to give him an outdoor space. Real sunshine does wonders for their appetite.

Hi there!
First off, welcome to the forum! It has helped me greatly and I hope you enjoy it .
I got my organic substrate/soil at Lowe’s and my tort seems to love it!
As for the eating, I’m not sure what’s up but with my little Sheldon didn't love to eat when I was watching but if I left the room, when I came back it would be gone! Now he’s much more comfortable with me and eats from my hand. I'd give it some time and also give him some space.
